Fall Food, Fall Ride

Same food over and over, but the trees are always changing.
Coconut yogurt breakfasts with a variety of toppings:

                                  here, with dried white mulberries and canned pumpkin

                   and here with drizzled cashew butter, chopped dried figs, and wheat bran
Bought three sweet potatoes and chopped and roasted them up to have for lunches throughout the week. I ate this at least 4 times this week, and can't remember what the 5th day was:

                             spinach, tempeh, roasted sweet potato with hummus dressing.
Dinners have been the rest of Isa's Dilly Stew, getting less and less attractive as the days passed but tasty as ever:


All good, filling food for increasingly chilly bike rides. Most recently to my favorite forest.

Post-Holiday June Wind-down

Let's get the last of June's random meals and photos out of the way before powering through July's heat:

                    Said pesto (basil, kale, walnut, nooch, olive oil, garlic, salt, lemon juice)

Food I Made, Mother's Day Walk

No treats here. This is pure, strictly unfun food. Well, I mean, it was all still very good but maybe wouldn't qualify as a treat. This is the stuff I've been eating in the meanwhile between all my other spectacular posts.

  Smoothie: kale, spirulina, frozen banana, protein powder, coconut, lemon juice, ginger.

                                Tempeh, cilantro, romaine, carrot, avocado, onion salad.

Stir fry over mun bean noodles. Kale, carrot, bell pepper, eggplant, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, rice vinegar and red pepper flakes.

                       When I remember and have time, hot lemon water in the mornings.

                                    Leftover stirfry, no kale but broccoli + all the other stuff.

I finally found okra, so I kinda made the Bhindi masala. Really, it's just sauteed okra with hing, curry powder, cumin, and cayenne over black eyed peas and topped with a chunky tomato sauce I made. There's red curry paste and coconut in the tomato sauce.

Cereal! I never buy cereal! But then I did. This is Cascadian Farms Ancient Grains. With almond milk and banana.
Then it was Mother's Day. I ate an orange and went to the folks' house.

We went for a nature walk down to a wildlife reserve, came back, and ate lunch.

This was the lunch salad - Boston lettuce, arugula, onion, chickpeas, carrot, tomato with lemon juice, salt and pepper. Light and nice and real talk with the folks.

This is a breach created by Hurricane Sandy. Apparently a lot of the wildlife has changed because of the salt water that has now overtaken previously fresh water.

Warming Weather, Walks

Happy May Day / International Workers' Day / Beltane / First actually beautiful day of the Spring that I can remember day / etc.
I took the day off because it's my workerly right, and although I didn't attend any marches or rallies, my heart and hope is with everyone who did, and everyone who wanted to but couldn't. After pouring rain last night (and a leak in my bedroom ceiling) the weather was gorgeous once it cleared up early this morning.
I went for a walk to nearby Ridgewood Reservoir to celebrate, like, nature and stuff.
A bit of an unsavory walk along the Jackie Robinson Parkway led to the entrance to Highland Park, haha:

View over Cypress Hills cemetary. You can't really see the church domes, but past that, way far out is Canarsie, Brooklyn.

There are causeways a little closer to the water but they were closed off. Not sure if they ever are open anymore.
Here is some food I've been eating lately, higher raw and more salads; more representative of the nicer turning weather.

                                 GF toast with raw almond butter, banana, and cinnamon

                    Coffee swirls that look like the hurricane weather that mostly passed us over

   Gena's Choosing Raw raw walnut taco salad that I've been wanting to make for a long time.

             Kale, frozen banana, spirulina, tahini, protein powder, lemon, ginger smoothie

Arugula, avocado, rice, raw sunflower seeds, roasted carrot, tomato salad with nooch and Braggs.

I put sunscreen on even in the dead of winter, and certainly did today on the walk, but Haxan is a sunbathing beauty. The kitchen gets the most light but the tiles are cold, so it's funny to see her seek out the thin shafts of light that come through.

Undisclosed Food from a Disclosed Location

A collection of other food gone undisclosed this last week or so:

                                        GF toast with almond butter and apricot jam

Tomato soup with red curry paste, rice, and cilantro

                                               Sweet potato, tomato, spinach, lentils

                                                                   Raw cashews!

Smoothie season is upon us! This was a clean-out-the-freezer edition: spinach, frozen mango, frozen banana, coconut flakes, water + rice milk. Alongside coffee.

A quick dinner. Zucchini slices, tomato, avocado, millet. Drizzled a miso-tahini sauce over it all post-photo.
                Delicious and pretty fruit salad: mango, banana, blackberries, coconut flakes.

Another gorgeous, delicious, vibrant smoothie. This is the beet n' berry smoothie from Choosing Raw. I've made it before. Was low on berries (had only 1/2 cup) so I bulked it up with spinach and raw vegan protein powder.

Vegetable sandwich: sundried tomato hummus, zucchini, carrot, red onion, avocado on toasted ciabatta bread

And, Ridgewood on a beautiful clear afternoon. Empire State Building straight on til morning:
