Feminist Art before the Feminist Zine Fest

Hello fellow vegan travelers on earth! Here is some food I've been eating:

TJ everything bagel with tofu cc and coffee. Never again with the TJ bagels. They're bread! Not bagel! People not in NY do not be fooled! People in NY do not attempt!

raw chard, roasted squash, tomatoes, the rice and lentil dish with red pepper hummus on top

sauteed chard, tempeh, mushrooms, and onions

sauteed chard, rice + lentils, tomatoes, roasted beets, tahini dressing. garlicky + good

smoothie: spinach, blueberries, frozen banana, almond milk, almond butter, Amazing Grass antioxidant berry powder

I think I mentioned I'm taking a few staycation days. After the smoothie and some hot coffee, made it out to the Brooklyn Museum for a Georgia O'Keeffe exhibit. So lovely. Maybe one day I'll turn a staycation into an actual vacation and visit her museum in New Mexico.

There is a feminist wing at the museum; they were also showcasing Beverly Buchanan, who I don't think I'd heard of before. She did a lot of land art installations based around rocks.

Couldn't leave without visiting the Marilyn Minter exhibit either.

a very cold bike ride home led me to leftovers: tempeh, mushroom, squash, spinach stirfry.

and by the time I had warmed up I remember some ice cream in the fridge. I love Luna & Larry's but this was not the best flavor, only because the pb in the ice cream hardened up so much that I had to bite to eat it. But not bad overall.
Stay warm, or cool if you're in a warm place. I can't wait until it's nice enough to bike around without 4 layers on. See ya soon.

Finally Groceries to Fuel the Umlaut

Been home, still grocery-less, so I tried out a new (to me - it's been there a while) bagel shop in the neighborhood. Large iced coffee, everything bagel with tofu cc.

Bagel wasn't great, maybe it'd be better toasted. But I do appreciate tofu cc in the hood.

made it down to Orchard Grocer and in typical maud fashion stupidly didn't get a delicious looking sandwich or the baked goods that people are raving about, but grabbed a raw kale caesar salad with chickpea croutons. The flavors were all good, the kale was just a little tough. maybe if it had sat in the dressing a little longer. Anyway, I'll be back, and do better.

Finally got my shit together and got some groceries. Still need a few things, but hoping to stop at Trader Joe's soon to fill in the gaps. This run: mushrooms, garlic, ginger, cherry tomatoes, beets, lemons, carrots, kabocha, oranges, onion

                                                 parsley, chard, mint, broccoli, bananas

roasted up the squash and beets

cooked brown rice, cooked lentils, chopped parsley and mint, added olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and red pepper flakes to make this herby, lemony protein saladish thing.

                                                        finished a new umlaut
which I'll have here on Sunday if you're local:

The plating leaves a little to be desired, but I'm a busy lady! Just get it in my mouth!

Herby rice  + lentils, tahini-miso dressing, roasted beets (I ate one before the pic...)

Vegan Market

I don't often get to the vegan pop-up shops around the city, but when I do I go hard! So much great stuff to choose from. I'm really lucky there's so many inventive options and such a fun scene here. This weekend was one I treated myself to.

Samosa lady to the left gave me a sample of Bhel Puri that was very good. Empanada people to the right. Screamers in the back had a breakfast pizza I wanted to try, Gone Pie out of the picture, and a whole bunch of other cool vendors.

met my friend Andy at the coffee shope next door and we wandered over when we finally got hungry. We split this seitan torta, which was amaaazzzzing. The vendor was Vegicano. Andy ordered the torta so not entirely sure what else was in it, beyond the obvious red cabbage slaw + corn, but damn. Thank you for being my hand model, A.

When I was there earlier there were more Peaceful Provisions donut options, when Andy and I went back, there were only 2 left! But that's okay because they all looked fantastic and this flavor was one I'd been eyeing on their instagram - this one is stuffed with rice pudding!! holy hell (it got a little smushed in my bag as I was biking around)

the money shot. This was incredible.

(I also ate some healthy shit in between)
a Gone Pie rice crispy treat - peanut butter + brown rice syrup crispy treat inside covered in chocolate with a chocolate lil pig on top.

There ya go. That's enough sugar for now.

Family birthday party AND MORE!!!! WOW

My uncle turned 70 the other weekend, and some extended out-of-town family was serendipitously around, so we had a surprise brunch for him.

ate a banana with pb beforehand in case it wasn't vegan-friendly at the party

this was my job - slicing oranges for mimosas

bagels, fruit salad, salad, grilled asparagus, other non-vegan stuff I don't need to mention

                                                         most importantly....the coffee

1/4 bagel, bloody mary, salad, fruit, jam was my plate

did a bad job of prep this week, mostly due to the fact that I kept forgetting to buy groceries to have anything to prep with. So, WF salad bar lunch: greens, roasted red pepper, roasted sweet potato, falafel balls, tahini sauce, sriracha

is organic candy supposed to make me feel better about eating it?

Enough empty space in the fridge that this little lady jumped in to investigate

Dinner was a smoothie - had frozen kale, 1 last frozen banana, vanilla protein powder, some pilfered mango chunks from my roommate, and almond milk. Did the job.

last of the pb, oats, goji berries + dried cranberries, blueberries, almond milk

more WF: greens, roasted butternut squash, roasted beets, tomatoes, 1 samosa, sweet chili pepper soy nuggets. Random but good.

                                                  Peacefood chocolate chip cookie :)

teaaaaaa (it's supposed to help with cramps, and I guess it did)

oats, a crumbled Bobo's oat bar in pb flavor, goji berries, banana, almond milk

Suja early afternoon snack. I've been working pretty feverishly on finishing up some zines for the Feminist Zine Fair at Barnard on March 5, so I sat at my desk and this juice fueled me until my brain had just had enough.

At which point, I jumped on my bike. It was almost 70 degrees on Friday! Rode to the Williamsburg waterfront, sat and read, grabbed some coffee, visited some bookstores, and rode back home....
See y'all soon.

Food & Art & Food again

Same breakfast all this week:

oats, chia seeds, dried cranberries, goji berries, pepitas, fresh blueberries, almond milk (actually the Almond Breeze almond/coconut blend - it's really good!)
Lunch all this week:

raw kale, baked tofu from aforementioned prep, roasted kabocha squash.

                                                          ~~Nutter Butter break~~

currently reading. QUITE timely. Really mind blowing

raw kale, tomatoes, roasted kabocha, avocado, chickpeas
It felt like a reaaalllly long week, and I am kinda busy this weekend so I took an extra day off and went to the Queens Museum on the second to last day to see the Mierle Laderman Ukeles exhibit. It also happened to be the first gorgeous and edging on warm day in quite some time.

The Unisphere, last featured in this post  from the summer. Notable but not quite noticeable is the ice cream truck in the distance! Like I said, it was *edging* on warm this day, haha!
Ukeles' main project is Maintenance Art - she followed around and worked with primarily sanitation workers over a course of years, but also cleaning people, janitors, etc. Her work is informed by the Wages For Housework movement of the 70s, if any of you are familiar with that, as well as having a kid and balancing a child with doing her art.

This piece is an arch created out of garbage and topped with protective gloves - from sanitation workers (sanmen, she calls them,) Con Ed workers, firefighters, etc.

There is also a room with a permanent display of where New York gets its water. The walls are newly decorated with posters from the No DAPL movement. Water is Life!
After this, mad with hunger, and kind of lost on where to go, I ended up at Liquiteria for a fast, nutrient-rich "mudslide" smoothie.

and later at home... couple of dark chocolate bites.
