BLD

Some older meals I had forgotten about, some new stuff:

granola in a jar with almond butter, goji berries, apple. almond milk added once I got to work

lazy. everything bagel untoasted with tofu cream cheese, lawge cawfee

ugly. oats, chia, banana, almond butter, goji berries, almond milk

kabocha squash, grated beets, spinach, some sort of dressing, and most likely some sort of protein under all those leaves, I can't remember.

Protein salad from Blossom du Jour: kale, black beans, corn, red pepper, avocado, quinoa, tahini dressing. Plus some reading

Justin's dark PB cups have basically disappeared from my usual haunts, and I don't like Theo's PB cups as much but these coconut bites are a more than sufficient substitute.

This was experimental and unfortunately still needs to be tweaked. It's a miso soup with wood ear mushroom, kabocha squash, tofu, spinach, and spices but I added the smoky Chinese lapsang souchong tea to the broth and it really just didn't work. There's something there but it hasn't revealed itself to me yet.

A more basic soupy bowl: mung bean noodles, bok choy, mushrooms, carrot, wakame, miso broth, and ginger.

J is always doing dinner duty, here's one I finally made for him. Roasted chickpeas, sauteed kale and broccoli, pan-fried tofu, and carrot-ginger soup.

Saturday night: Twilight Zone, Club Mate soda, the new coffee table we found in the trash and hauled to his place from the West Village. Unpictured: popcorn.

Bowls Post Boston

Back 2 basics post-Boston:

oats with raw mueseli, frozen blueberries, goji berries, chia seeds, vanilla almond milk

I made a carrot-ginger soup! because I compulsively buy carrots and forget about them. And because why not? It's so easy, I probably should have made this 200 times over, but i think it was my first time. Or at least one of very few. Carrots, broth, onion, garlic, ginger, unsweetened soy milk, 1 sweet potato that was also ready to go, turmeric, salt + pepper, blended.

                                                   4 sauerkraut pierogies and collards

Lunch: raw kale salad, lentils, avocado, tomatoes. I'm finally allowing myself to buy tomatoes again after a winter dry spell.

miso soup with mung bean threads, bok choy, carrot, scallion, mushroom, tofu, ginger, wakame, and jalapeno.
It's all that I can do.

NYC --> BHC

Jarrod and I took another brief trip to Boston this weekend to see Judge, an old school NYHC band. Weird place to em, maybe? but J and i fell in love despite regional hardcore beef so let us be the bridge of love and respect, haha. And I'll always take any excuse to get out of NYC.
We took the bus up early Friday morning and when we got in, got banh mi sandwiches in Chinatown and walked over to the Boston harbor.

it was a beautiful weekend, not warm exactly but pleasant enough and sunny.
The Institute for Contemporary Art is right on the water as well. Half a wing was closed but there was enough to enjoy and a nice view. The building itself is pretty cool too.

                                                                     Ray Navarro
I forget what we ate after this? But there were a few hours of reading and caffeinating at Diesel Cafe in Somerville. Later that night we saw The Witch at the Coolidge Corner theater and afterwards stopped by the Trader Joe's for snacks n stuff for the next day.

bananas, CLIF bars, pressed juices, chocolate covered cherries

Having woken up so early on Friday we slept in a bit Saturday morning and just got coffee and a dry ass plain ass non-New York bagel at Peet's in Harvard Square. J and I split up for a bit so he could meet his folks for lunch. I read a bit longer and wandered Mass Ave to find my own lunch.

Passed on the People's Republik (above,) passed also on Life Alive which is recommended but was packed and pricey.

Instead I found VO2, a vegan cafe within a yoga studio that specialized in smoothies and vegan comfort food.
tried a sample shot of their green monster drink which was pretty good - kale, lime, ginger, apple, spinach, pineapple juice

Got the seitan slam: BBQ seitan, coleslaw, Russian dressing on rye. Guess it's kinda like a Reuben, right? Fuckin finally. The sandwich itself was very good; the chips and pickle on the side were mostly filler and pretty pointless - I wish there had been a salad side option or something.
J and I met back up again to read more and caffeinate more, then went for a walk along the Charles.

I know there's waterfront in New York but this is much less overbearing, much less crowded, and much cleaner. I really appreciate this city.
We headed back to Central Square and got some food at the Middle East before the show and meeting up with some of J's friends briefly.

                                                          grilled tofu salad with olives

this adorable and hilarious man and his plate of rice + beans and hummus
So anyway, the show was great. A bunch of younger hardcore bands played, World Be Free (a sort of hardcore supergroup w members of Judge and Gorrilla Biscuits) played, Right Brigade played, and then Judge played. The thing is, I got in the pit for about half a second and once I backed to the edge, some dude threw his elbow back into my face and so it goes. I ducked outta there with a very bloody nose and sat outside for the remainder of the set. Sounded good from out there, though.
I'll spare you the picture of all of my blood but here's J and i cleaned up, if sorta sweaty, me sorta dazed, and ready to umm head back and go the hell to sleep.

I found footage of the show if anyone wants to see:

Thanks again Boston, you really know how to throw down. And thank you J for sharing the throw down with me.

good food from a good dood

my meals are increasingly Jarrod-influenced.

not that there's anything wrong with that!

this is granola, chia seeds, goji berries, banana, frozen blueberries, and almond milk

a friend is in a workshop taught by Kembra Pfahler and he gave me a copy of a KP designed screenprint! I thought that was really nice. Will have to find somewhere good to hang this up.

J-made meal: quinoa, chickpea, onion, Brussels sprouts

another adorable J creation: Valentine's day breakfast with a goddamn goji berry heart

he also gave me this book with a revised cover. i believe it insinuates that we're the city's most unwanted inhabitants. If you need us, we'll be scurrying across the subway tracks into our love nest.

AND he made dinner. Sauteed kale and okra, mashed potatoes with garlic, baked tofu, quinoa. What did i do for him, you might ask? well ummmmmmmmmmmm hmmmm

here is a sandwich I made for lunch with minimal ingredients in the house: tofu, hummus, grated beet, onion, spinach. Good nuff.

keeping warm with some really nice + smoky, deep tea. the tea collection is growing

quick snack before doing taxes: popcorn with nooch and a bit of melted Earth Balance
That's all for now. Hope you guys had a good week.

Out of the mason jars and into my mouth

Monday was another snow day, though with much less accumulation than the blizzard. I spent most of the morning inside drinking too much coffee and writing, but got out for some laundry and a bit of a walk to get more coffee and groceries.
Breakfast smoothie:

collards, frozen banana, cranberries, vega berry protein powder, water, lemon, ginger

from the walk. not a b&w photo, we've just reached peak bleak February time.

the coffee shop, My Coffee Cup in Glendale. i went here specifically to sit in the oversized coffee cups. By myself.
Got groceries on the walk back, didn't get a haul shot but spent way too much money (somehow when things are on sale, that happens.) This is the first meal i made with the goods:

avocado, spinach, tofurky slices, sriracha hummus sandwich
I guess i was a little overcaffeinated and overzealous in my purchases because I forgot there was still a fair amount of produce at home that had to be used up and eaten first. When in doubt, stir fry:

onion, ginger, garlic, broccoli, mushrooms, green beans, carrot with soy sauce and sesame oil. tofu thrown in at the last minute

Finally finished the Emma Goldman autobio I've been reading (well, volume 1) and found out the apartment she lived in for ten years is right around the corner from work, so i stopped by on my break. Funny that there's a plaque commemorating a woman who was imprisoned and harassed by authorities throughout her life and probably wouldn't have wanted this sort of hero worship. All the same, I'm glad it's there.

Trying not to get sick, so I'm drinking what looks like a biology experiment but is in actuality echinacea tea with goji berries.
Stay warm.

the fruits of other people's labor

Jarrod breakfast extraordinaire:

oats, granola, blackberries, blueberries, goji berries, chia seeds, almonds, soy milk. AND iced coffee. Doin' it well.

J's roommates are amazing cooks. One made this vegan spaghetti squash lasagna with cashew ricotta and daiya. She let us have some and it was so good.

Here with sauteed kale, field roast sausage, and mushrooms. Gotta get that green.

my less work intensive lunch: more raw collards with black eyed peas and hummus. Also sriracha.

more of that damn curry. Still a serving left.

stopped by V-Spot the other day for a small pop-up and to say hello to Barbara at Gone Pie. Picked up this almond coconut fudge, which was awesome, as well as some lemon tahini cookies, which I love. Brought them to meet some friends later and didn't get a picture. Trust they were good.

Ate the fudge at the zine library with a cup of coffee from Tiny's Giant.
