Food, Coffee, Cats n' Zines

more food at the folks' house. They don't have a ton of stuff there that I can eat, so this is sort of a random sandwich/meal, but it was filling and did the job.

back home: raw kale salad, roasted sweet potato, tofu, avocado, sriracha. Ate this many times this last week.

Reading Americanah, which Lacy Davis mailed me. I'm enjoying it a lot so far, though it's very different from what I usually read. Alongside coffee and oats with goji berries, almonds, blueberries, and chia seeds in almond milk.

After a long day of visiting J and not eating, I ran into Sunac, the first cheap place I could think of nearest the train, and picked up vegetable sushi: spinach, avocado, cucumber.
early morning bike ride took me to Little Skips, a nearby coffee shop where I got a coffee and an everything bagel with tofu cc. Reading this little book of poetry a friend reccomended.
Later that day I headed into the city for a zine fest. Brought some carrots, tamari almonds, and a CLIF bar to get through the day, but it wasn't really a food day. Here's a picture of the table

Keepin Cool

Breakfast oats are backkk and better than ever

      overnight oats, chia seeds, almond, blackberries, goji berries, coconut flakes, and soy milk

                 spinach, roasted beets, carrot, sundried tomato, pepitas, tahini, and braggs

onion flavored mary's gone crackers, coconut thai curry flavored hummus, baby carrots. simple dinner.

You may remember my dear friend Greg Farrell from all the years we dated and lived together, ha. Well he's got a new book out and it's great. I ate a ABC chocolate chip cookie while reading it, which only added to the experience.

 my parents are outta town in Maine for the week. I stopped by the house to feed the cats and get some quiet time. There is a park near their house with a woods, so I took a night walk.

Breakfast done right: sesame bagel with vegetable tofu cream cheese, iced espresso with soy milk, poetry, and a crossword puzzle in the backyard. It really doesn't get much better than that.

back to my apartment to love my own little black beauty. Cool, quick lunch after the bike ride back home: acai smoothie with banana, kale, Vega berry protein powder, ginger, frozen acai, and lemon! The lemon cut the sweetness and made it a lot better.

Summer Eats

Been slacking on oats for breakfast this week, took a turn for the breadier:

                                Tofu cc on a toasted sesame bagel. I ate both halves, of course.

Something way, way outta the ordinary but damned well a good decision: Luna & Larry's ice cream was on sale! This is the ginger cookie caramel flavor and ooohhh my god. Never have I walked faster than with a pint of melting vegan ice cream in my bag.

Lentils, romaine, roasted beets (yes, maybe outta season but our oven is working again and I missed roasted veg most of all,) hummus. Looks like I didn't get any photos, and now it's all gone but for the rest of the week, I ate the lentils and beets over sauteed green beans with sundried tomatoes and red pepper flakes. Really good.

Walked over to St. mark's in the Bowery church to sit and eat lunch in the yard and saw that they had put up a memorial to the victims of the Pulse Orlando shooting. So sad, and really moving to see 49 shirts fluttering in the wind. I decided to find a different place to eat, but stood for a second to remember their lives.

Found some frozen acai packs, so I've been making smoothies for dinner again. This was frozen acai, 1 banana, Vega berry protein powder, spinach, unsweetened almond milk, and ginger. Pretty good but a little on the sweet side. Gotta remember to buy a lemon to cut it a bit.

V Burger and the rest of it

Breakfast oats!!!!!! maybe if I add exclamation points, it will be more exciting!!!!!!

oats, chia, strawberries, coconut flakes, and this chocolate coconut butter that Jarrod kindly bought for me a while back. It's melty in this heat but kind of hardened on the oats from the cold milk.

my friend J met me after work and we got some food across the street at VBurger. It's been staring me in the face since it opened months ago but I'd yet to go in. He assured me that the chili cheese fries were worth it, and he knows the best vegan food around the city, so:

Da Vinci burger: kinda sweet like an Italian meatball, but pretty good. It was a soft burger, though, and made a bit of a mess.

The chili cheese fries. The cheese wasn't very melty, nor was there much cheese on the fries, but these were good too. Ya just kind of have to mush things around.
We also went on an Oreo hunting expedition after this...successfully scoring Reese's mini Oreos (not to be confused with peanut butter Oreos.) No pictures of the pocketful of cookies I walked away with.

back to the usual, boring, healthy stuff I eat when left to my own devices. Chia pudding with almond milk, peanut butter, vanilla protein powder, and banana. The combination of protein powder and peanut butter did something disagreeable to the texture and flavor. I might have to leave out the protein powder next time. Oh, wait, i told myself I'd stop eating peanut butter anyway. Ok, problem solved.

didn't feel like making a real dinner after work at the almost-end of the week, so just a simple turmeric smoothie: frozen banana, almond milk, a little protein powder (Vega vanilla), and a lot of turmeric and ginger.

Groceries + Prep

Stir fry because that was all that was left in the fridge:

rice, tofu, carrot, broccoli, mushrooms, tamari, ginger, garlic, red pepper flakes, scallions, the usual.

 oats, chia, banana, blueberries, goji berries, peanut butter, almond milk to fuel the grocery trip.

Haul: avocado, onion, red potatoes, strawberries (non-Driscoll!), sundried tomatoes, vine tomatoes, garlic, a Justin's cup, prickly pear soda, almond milk, string beans, a coffee I picked up on the way back.

the store I usually go to has upped their price on hummus by a dollar! (guess they finally caught on) so I made my own from some soaked + cooked chickpeas. Blended with tahini, cumin, paprika, cayenne, garlic, lemon juice, and chickpea cooking water. 
the remaining chickpeas were tossed in salt, liquid smoke, cayenne, olive oil, and garlic powder and roasted. I also boiled some potatoes. Nice productive prep day.

iced coffee, avocado toast (actually I didn't toast the bread) with black salt, cayenne, and hemp seeds. I ate 2 slices.

same salad as above with the dressing on it. Really big and filling. I was eating a head of romaine a day for these lunch salads.

Boring, boring, I know. I'll try to have some fun stuff for you guys next time. Hope you're all well and cool enough and giving those animals enough water...

The healthy stuff, then the candy

Hi again.

 hot coffee, cold cereal: oats, chia, frozen blueberries, peanut butter, raspberry jam, almond milk

sandwich on wheat: horseradish-beet hummus, romaine, Tofurky hickory smoked, avocado. also a few baby carrots.
  Smoothie: frozen kale, frozen banana, peanut butter, vanilla Vega, almond milk. Hot coffee.

            Sauteed kale, Sweet Earth Teriyaki flavor veggie burger. Sriracha on it all post-pic.

      Gave a friend some zines and he bought me one of Blossom's storemade "betterfinger bar."

It's really good. They're sizeable too. Slightly less crunchy than I remember the original Butterfinger bar being, but that's not really a complaint.
