Pre-memorial day: pets & new products

Climate change means there are no intermediary seasons. We are straight on into summer and I am very hot, painful heat rash included.

this treat I did not like so much. I've been intrigued by the beans in dessert trend and this sounded good, but maybe it would have been better not gluten free. This tasted like sweet-ish wet rubber. Oh well. Now I know and you know and i have done my service. Thank you and good night.

Champs and the rest of the week

Friday was my mom's birthday and I walked through the farmer's market to find her some nice flowers and a food to make up for the lack of anything on mother's day. Stopped at this stand for some vegan focaccia for myself too. It was very good!

J and I went out to Champs this morning. He had been in Boston for a few days and came back craving vegan diner food, having stopped at Boston's version of Champs, Veggie Galaxy, the day coming back.

I got the French Toast Slam - French toast, home fries, soysage, tempeh bacon, and tofu scramble. blogging reminds me I need to buy groceries.... K see ya.

Whiskers Vegan Bakery and other stuff

There was a Champs outpost on Bushwick Avenue until last fall or so; the space has been revamped into a vegan bakery, so never fear.
I made sure to eat a salad before eating baked goods.

I biked over to the bakery to balance out any overload on baked goods I felt like taking on. A 7 minute bike ride = 3 goodies, right?

Very good, though not much icing. The insides were pretty plain, but texturally soft and flaky and cinnamony. The pecans were really nice, a sweet + salty combo. A really sizeable serving, too, this would be plenty for two to share with something else breakfasty on the side - a smoothie or scramble or salad.

 This was awesome. This was the first thing I ate. The chocolate was well distributed throughout and gooey (maybe due to biking around in the sun.) The pastry was flaky and light.

I can't really judge this GF muffin too well, as I froze it when I got it and when I finally ate it, I was overexcited to eat it and didn't entirely let it thaw all that well. The flavor seemed good, but it was a little gummy and the paper wrapper stuck to the muffin. That is generally my experience with GF goods, but who knows? It probably would have been good toasted a bit, or with jam or butter on it. I maybe would buy it again if I go back, and eat it fresh.
Anyway, Whiskers was good. They offer breakfast sandwiches and bagels and coffee stuffs as well. I'm glad it's close and I'm glad it exists. I believe their goods are carried elsewhere - the listing is on their website. There is a small bit of seating on an outside patio overlooking not-all-that-beautiful Bushwick ave, and 1 table inside to eat at as well. my one complaint is that they are open only until 4. They do open at 7 on weekdays, making me wonder whether I'll get up & out early and pick something up on the way, biking to work over the summer. Probably not, but it's a nice stop on a day off.
On the healthier turn,

A quick smoothie for dinner the other night. Spinach, vanilla Vega protein powder, almond milk, peanut butter, 1 frozen banana.
oatmeal breakfast. Oats, chia seeds, goji berries, strawberries, raspberry jam, peanut butter, almond milk. Bought a big jar of pb a few weeks ago and am enjoying it as well as its price tag, but I think I'll go back to almond butter when it's finished, as the pb is not completely agreeing with my stomach.

J and I made a nice dinner the other night: brown rice, kale, chickpeas, okra, and the sample of Korean BBQ flavored seitan that came in the athlete's box I got him. It was a good size for a sample box but I wasn't all that interested in the flavor. Apparently Korean BBQ is not at all spicy - it just tasted like it was flavored with soy sauce. I threw some red pepper flakes into the dish.

That's all for now. I'm afraid I haven't been eating anything really interesting lately, but I'll try to work on that.

Chloe's, Tattoos

J very sweetly got me a Chloe's giftcard for Christmas. I'd been waiting for a good reason to use it, but sometimes any day yr alive and walking around is a good enough reason. After holding off long enough, we went last week.

I got a BBQ whiskey portobello and seitan sandwich. Also very good. It had a slice of grilled pineapple on top.

We ate outside because it was crowded as hell inside, and it probably always will be. I've never walked by and not seen it crowded. Luckily, when it's nice enough, just take yr food to go and Washington Square Park is right nearby to eat on a bench.
We didn't get any desserts, but there is still a bit of money left on the card, so another stop will be made soon.
And for Shen: besides the wolf paw/human hand tattoo I just got recently, here are my other vegan/food tattoos:

This is the other tattoo I got at Gristle - all vegan ink - it's an image from an old vegan zine (I don't remember which one, sorry - I saw the image in a book about radical publications)

        blackberries - this one has a mostly poetic meaning to me, but I also am a fan of the berry...

celery root! This isn't a great shot, but I love this tattoo and never get to admire it since I never see it, ha. I love how gnarly it is. It kinda looks like Alien shooting something out of its mouth or something to me.

This is one I designed and Jarrod gave me, based off the XXX tattoo that some straight edge folks get: I didn't want to get that, fearing it'd be the kiss of death, but 1 X is a step that way. Vegan straight edgers sometimes get xvx, I threw the E in there as a circle-E for Equality. Way to over-explain things and make them less cool.
I also have an umlaut tattoo and a bunch of zine objects that are vegan related since I do the food zine... and a few animal tattoos...but I think I've shown enough skin for now, haha.

April Showers, May Shivers

The weather has been so RUDE here lately. Some days are warm enough to warrant iced coffee that beads up on the mug:

Haven't done a grocery haul shot in a while. Also haven't done a Trader Joe's run in a while. Here's 2 for 1:

                       cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, broccoli, kale, snow peas, blackberries

 almond milk, chocolate covered cherries, tofu, tempeh, raspberry jam, vegan cream cheese, beet hummus, 1 lemon, 2 CLIF bars. Unpictured Gingerade kombucha and jojoba oil.

with peanut sauce and sriracha. These were good. I wanna try making my own rolls some day.

was feeling really crummy the other day and saw a picture of mushroom congee in a vegetarian cookbook and was like, "Yes. Yes, that is exactly what I want to eat later." miso broth, lotsa mushrooms, lotsa ginger, garlic, and red pepper flakes, snow peas, rice, and seaweed.

mother's day

A very quiet mother's day. I wanted to go to the Queens museum but didn't plan it out well. my cousin was at my folks' house so I went over for lunch. I've been busy and crazy and didn't get my mom anything...but I picked these flowers on the walk from the bus to their house, haha. Basically a bunch of weeds, but, hey, Queens giveth and I ain't gonna say no.

lunch in the yard. my mom made a lobster soup with leftovers for the omnis. I ate steamed asparagus, tomatoes, hummus, and lettuce with bread. I wasn't super hungry, so it was fine, especially considering I basically just dropped in near-unannounced.

                                                            They had wine; I had water.

J and I made dinner later that night. Tofu, chickpeas, broccoli, kale, brown rice, mushrooms, onion. All the missing protein from lunch.

A random lunch from the other day, just for more color. Steamed collards, falafel, steamed beets, eggplant salad, red pepper hummus. I've been mostly good about bringing my own lunch to work but sometimes it gets boring, sometimes I forget.

Busy Weekend

A regular breakfast of late:

muesli mixed with oats, banana, goji berries, chia seeds, and peanut butter. poured almond milk over it afterwards, but it looks prettier dry.

my childhood best friend is getting married  in June and had her bachelorette party on the Lower East Side Saturday night. This is probably the most glamorous thing I'll ever attend. I met them at a hotel and went out to dinner. There wasn't much I could eat, and I don't drink anymore but I was glad to have celebrated with her. The rest of the party went to a silent disco after dinner and I ran home to decompress, haha. I had a busy next day anyway.

I told Shen (in the VI) I might do a post about my vegan/food tattoos (of which I have a few now.) That post is yet to come but this is the newest to the collection - it was a piece of flash from an artist at an all-vegan tattoo shop in Bushwick, called Gristle. I have only been there for one other tattoo and really like the shop. This flash was part of a fundraiser for the Wolf Conservation Center upstate and I thought the design was really sweet. It also reminded me of the old school ALF (?) design:

So anyway, I got that tattoo Sunday morning and stopped on the way back home at Loving Hut, which is right down the block.

Then I headed over to Jarrod's, where he was finishing up a seitan brisket to bring to a potluck. I didn't take any pictures of the whole thing, but he was very proud and rightfully so. Really nice baked seitan loaf cooked in broth and veggies.

This was my plate of everything at the party; it was very veggie friendly. Kale salad, hummus, roasted mushrooms, chickpea biryani, seitan brisket + veg, pita, mango. I also had some appetizers of crackers and olives. Real pleasant get together.
THEN we headed into the city to say official goodbyes to my friend Scott. Bittersweet.
