High Fiber

I mean, I think most vegan food is pretty high in fiber, but the last few days I went haaaarrrddd. My tummy is not entirely happy.

But first, here is a shot of (some) of my zine haul from the weekend. Some political stuff, some witchy stuff, some food/drink stuff, an anarcho-queer cat worship zine (haha.)

Flipped through a few zines while eating the last of the zine fest snacks - crumbled kale chip dust on top of arugula, lentils, hummus, and tomatoes.

Whacked out on caffeine and chocolate, I began some major prep Monday:

Some granola for J since he's always so kind about making us delicious breakfasts. This was oats, hazelnut oil, coconut/agave syrup, cinnamon, vanilla extract, salt, coconut flakes, macadamia nuts, and dried cranberries.

What did I tell you? J had to get up early today so I didn't feel as guilty about him making breakfast. It was not my intention to bring granola and then eat the spoils, BUT. With his usual additions of blueberries, chia seed, and soy milk.

Tuesday's lunch (despite the prep, I left the goods at home) relying on WF salad bar again. Beet salad with apple, grape, and red cabbage, a few tomatoes, raw kale, artichoke hearts, and minty wasabi tofu. Random as hell.

Whirlwind Week

Wow, guys, so the zine fest is over and now we can go back to regularly scheduled programming. But here is a recap of the lead up.

Marmalade Umlaut was featured in TimeOut NY! my zine was in a...mag-a-zine. Thanks to Jillian; she was sweet and stopped by the table.

                                                    Back to the avo GF toast breakfasts...

It rained on and off on Wednesday. There was a rainbow I didn't catch but thought the light in the sky through the budding tree was beautiful here.

Shanghai dumplings, 3 cubes of tofu, gingery snap peas, and some brown rice pilaf via WF salad bar.

This is me, Mitchell Kuga, Shannon Mustipher, and Bill Roundy at the food + drink zine panel on Saturday. I heard good things, but my brain was very busy freaking out. Thanks to my friends who came by to support!! I love love love you people. Also, the co-panelists were super rad, especially Mitchell. Looking forward to the next SALT zine.

Post-panel lunch. I was running around like an insane person, so I was glad to have the stuff made to throw this salad together: arugula, lentil salad, hummus, red cabbage, tomatoes, radishes, carrot.
After shoving the salad down my throat and putting together a few more copies of the zines, I ran out the door to meet my friend Jeff. He just moved back to the city from North Carolina, is working for a record distributor, and so he gets comp'ed to go to shows! He gave me his +1 and we saw Krill, mitski, and Speedy Ortiz at Bowery Ballroom. Great, great show. Thank you Jeff!!

                       Zine fest, day 2 fuel: oats, coconut flakes, dried cranberries, walnuts

This was the set-up, before Jarrod showed up. He brought some of his own zines and we split space on the table. I was prepared with snacks for the 7 hour day, as you can see: kale chips, bananas, raspberry leaf tea.

Also carrot-coconut mini muffins! Of course the vegans were snacking all day long at the table.

And then had the first smoothie in what seems like a long time. With black coffee, cuz it's still a little chilly. This smoothie was spinach, 1 1/2 frozen bananas, marley coffee protein powder, water, and a handful of goji berries to top.

I am looking forward to going through my haul from the last two days, maybe biking, cleaning a little, and hanging out with this lovely babe.

Spring Salads & Sidewalks

It was pouuuuring on Monday but I made it out of the house for groceries and laundry.

With the groceries, I made a pretty Spring salad to brighten up the gray, wet day. There is arugula under all that stuff, then cucumber, radishes, lentil salad with capers, onion and carrot, and tomatoes.

I also bought a few pears. Not sure why I always forget about them - they are so delicious when they are ripe.

Today walking around I found some spaghetti on the sidewalk with chopsticks jutting out. Luckily I had already eaten and wasn't tempted.

Another delicious spring salad: arugula, carrot, lentil salad, red cabbage, cucumber, tomato, and roasted radish! With nooch, cayenne, and apple cider vinegar.

Bought this coconut water/coffee drink today. I didn't like it too much at the first sip, but it grew on me. Bonus points for how metal it looks.

I don't mean to keep pushing this stuff, but I'm hosting a food & drink zine panel at the Brooklyn Zine Fest this Saturday the 25th. Come by if you are inclined! I'm actually tabling the next day, Sunday the 26th, but I'll have zines both days. The other panelists are repping SALT magazine, The Modern Travelers' Green Zine, and Bar Scrawl. It should be fun.

               And, finally, a cranberry chia drink from Glue and Glitter. It's tasty if nothing else.

Salad Days Indeed

Healthy stuff first, to trick you into thinking that's what I eat most of the time:

Sauteed bok choy with onion, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, red pepper flakes and tossed with lentils. This lunch opened in my bag and soaked my pants so I smelled like it all day.

These Cafe Indigo slices were on sale at Whole Foods! I can't NOT buy sweets on sale, that would be careless!

This lemon-poppy flavor was good, if a little dry. I bought a carrot cake version for Jarrod that looked nice and moist though.
I won tickets to go to the opening night of Salad Days, a new documentary about the DC punk scene in the 80s.

THE MOVIE RULES. Go see it if you can! There was a Q&A after the screening with the director, Michael Hampton from The Faith, and John Joseph of Cro-Mags (and vegan fame)! JJ had some fun stories to tell...

Jarrod came with - we met at Vanessa's first. I got a sesame pancake with grilled tofu. This is kinda like a banh mi on softer bread.

Friday WF bar lunch: steamed kale, roasted butternut squash, steamed beets, chickpeas, garlic miso dressing.

Dinner from last night/lunch today/probably lunch forever since there is SO much: quinoa, chickpeas, sauteed mushrooms with onions, broccoli, soy sauce.

Sun, Posi Feelings & Stuff

Hey guys! The weather has been more and more lovely. Saturday it should be 75*! On Monday I went grocery shopping and ate lunch on the fire escape.

Picnic-inspired, this is potato salad and steamed asparagus. The potato salad has ACTUAL (vegan) mayo in it! I have never been a fan of mayo, but I figured it had been forever since I tried it, so I gave it a shot. Not terrible, but I used a light hand. Also in the mix are raw chopped carrots, red cabbage, mustard, onion, and capers.

In addition to (and perhaps more importantly than) buying groceries, I threw out some stuff that I had bought last week and didn't get around to eating. Just salvagable were the raw collard salad I had made, and the last of some cherry tomatoes. I cooked up some lentils, threw on a dusting of nooch, and ate up. This was dinner and lunch the next day.

                                                    Next day breakfast. Very pleasant.

Jarrod and I went to another yoga class Tuesday night and I didn't want to eat a heavy meal beforehand, so instead I stocked up on a variety of juices, taking a tip from Shen. I drank all of the pineapple mint green juice on the left, and a few sips of the Evolution Organic V. It was a late class (9pm) so it was nice to be both refreshed from yoga and have had a fair amount of time to drink and digest before sleeping.

Passed this Keith Haring statue near Cooper Union while walking to the studio. He is a favorite of mine for sure, so I had to take a picture. There's such joy and hope in his work. I think this is a new installment.

Van's waffles were on sale for $2 a box, so I bought some. Here is one toasted up with apricot jam, cashew butter, and banana slices for breakfast.

That's all for now. I've been feeling really good lately. Hopefully more delicious food and juices to come, continued not drinking (!), more bike rides and yoga to come...

Food So Cute It'll Make Ya Barf

First of all, will you look at this most beautiful bowl of food.
I had to go to work Saturday morning and Jarrod did not but he got out of bed before me, made coffee and this beauty! Coconut granola, blueberries, blackberries, chia seeds, and almond milk. What a guy.


When I'm left to my own devices, breakfast looks like this, haha:

Okay, okay, sometimes I can pull this together, but I was channeling him:

               Creamy buckwheat with rice milk, dried cranberries, cashew butter. Coffee.

Another day with no lunch --> Whole Foods salad bar: steamed kale, steamed golden beets, roasted red peppers, falafel balls, tabbouleh, hummus.

 I finished my newest zine. It will be sent out soon, or if you are local, I'll be tabling with it on April 26th at the Brooklyn Zine Fest!

Speaking of, I am hosting a panel on food zines at the BZF! Yesterday, Jarrod and I met up to do some work in a coffee shop. He wrote a paper, I read zines and took notes. Cool Variety cup, no?

 Then we walked to a tortilla factory and got some fresh tacos. 2 veggie tacos, no cheese, no sour cream. They had refried beans, avo, tomato, lettuce, and cilantro. This was our fuel for a Sunday night candle-lit yoga class.
After yoga we got some groceries and I watched as he did all the work again, this time for dinner:

Quinoa, Brussels sprouts, chickpeas, Field Roast sausage, onion, and kale. Oh! AND while he was cooking, his roommate shared a taste of vegan Cheezehound fresh mozzarella she had bought at the pop-up market! 1) That was very nice of her 2) It was very delicious.
Anyway, I think that's an overload on cute shit for now. See you guys later.
