Ferns, Champs, Vegan Propaganda

Finally picked up some fiddlehead ferns from the farmer's market.

my roommate likes them a lot so I asked her how to prepare them. Ya wash off the brown husks, then soak them, and then boil them for about 10 minutes. Apparently you can get really sick if you don't cook them well! After boiling I sauteed them with garlic, olive oil, salt, balsamic vinegar, canellini beans, and chopped zucchini with thyme, black pepper, and nooch.

It was Jarrod's last day of classes, so he came over and we ate but for a little bit more of a celebration, we followed the meal with a bike ride over to Champs.

After this, we went back to his place and watch Darren Aronofsky's Noah, which came out last year. It was fucking rad!! I am not a huge fan of big budget CGI movies (or Russell Crowe, really) but I do like Aronofsky and it turns out (as we kinda picked up from the movie) that he is vegan! The story was a crazy adaptation of the Noah story with a ton of possible interpretations but the vegan/eco-feminist, masculinity story stood out to us. This is one pretty interesting review. Has anyone seen the movie?
Continuing J-inspired breakfasts:

                               oats, chia, raisins, goji berries, coconut flakes, almond milk

 a salad for dinner tonight, incorporating quinoa, which I don't often use - but I am trying to be more careful of my gluten or soy based protein intake. Baby spinach, avocado, cilantro, scallion, red cabbage, carrot, tomato, quinoa with Braggs and sriracha.

boring breakfast, but it does the job, especially since with the weather warming up I am eating more lightly.

Et Cetera

The quickest, easiest breakfast around. One stop shop since OBVIOUSLY I need coffee too. Peep my desk hoarding Komucha bottle skills.

                                          Everything bagel with tofu cc from The Bean.

 Homemade muesli. Oats, raisins, goji berries, coconut flakes, chia seeds, almond milk, banana.

                                                                   Same, with coffee.

A really depressing Vega drink. I had NO food in the house, so this was Vega protein powder mixed with water, coconut-almond milk, and a bit of coffee. I felt like a sad astronaut drinking this. It's not the Vega's fault. It's mine. It needed a banana and some spinach :(

THIS is the effort level I need to stay at. Raw, vegan pad thai. Sumer is a-cumin in. Zucchini noodles, mango, avocado, red cabbage, sundried tomatoes with an almond butter sauce (AB, soy sauce, ume vinegar, water, agave, red pepper flakes.) Honestly I would have loved some scallion or carrot but this was basically an afterthought meal. I had such random stuff, some of it just wilting or already in the fridge. But rest assured I will be making this more often.

Two cookies from a well-stocked bodega in the city. I need a sugar detox at this point though.

 I didn't eat that banana, but someone else did. And then left it for everyone on the train to enjoy.

This is literally a thing I made and ate for dinner on a sad no-groceries evening. The celery wasn't even mine. But it did the job, I guess, of...feeding me.

Vegetable soup from Vanessa's. J and I saw a Piotr Szulkin movie at Spectacle (actually we have so far seen 3 of a quartet of these semi-apocalyptic Polish films) and met at Vanessa's first. I ordered a large soup, not expecting HOW large, so I ate about 1/3 and saved the rest for dinner the next day, which was good because I have been really slacking on buying groceries and making my own meals. It's hard because I feel like I'm overbooking myself as the weather is nicer. Still trying to find a good medium between being social and hiding in my house.

Memorial Day Punk Brunch

Monday Jarrod had a few friends over for an early brunch.

                                          I went over Sunday night, this is the hood at dusk.

      He made cous cous with chickpeas, Field Roast, kale, and onions. It was awesome.

The next day we were up early enough to eat a pre-brunch. His specialty: granola, chia, almonds, strawberries, soy milk. Iced coffee. Then more coffee.

Blurry tofu scramble. Onions, garlic, peppers, mushrooms, broccoli, tofu. The spices were turmeric, cumin, salt and  pepper.
I baked the previous day and brought over two kinds of muffins.

We went up to his roof and enjoyed a warm, sunny brunch. There were also plenty of berries and bananas, as well as coffee, punk, and shop talk.

Stuffs I Didn't Make

Pistachio-Cranberry Muesli from those people who make the chia pods. Complete with tiny spoon in lid. Cute, fine, I should just make this stuff myself.

             "Basic" burrito with black beans, guacamole etc. from Dos Torros. Also fine.

                                         Black bean and corn salsa salad from Paradis.

Avo toast on GF bread with black salt, hemp seeds, cayenne pepper. Still have not stepped up my game to Terry Hope Romero level, but the hemp seeds were a nice touch.

        fiddlehead ferns at the farmer's market. Didn't buy em. I have no idea what to do with em.

                                            Israeli couscous and ratatouille from Paradis.

                                                   Everything bagel without a bite in it.

Met my lovely friend Marta at Bunna Cafe for an Ethiopian "feast for two." Her mom actually owns an Ethiopian place in D.C. but Marta said this was more inventive than what her mom makes. High praise. I also forgot to get a photo of my drink, but it was a refreshing ginger-thyme iced tea.
Now to save some $$$.

Salads, Not Salads

Lots of treats in the last post, here's the stuff I actually made myself, aided by a decent grocery haul:

   GF bread, tomatoes, tofu, tempeh, thyme, hummus, cream cheese, greens mix, spinach

almond butter, chocolate covered cherries, choc-covered espresso beans (dangerous!) CLIF and Luna bars, pistachios, bagels

   Salad 1: greens mix, split peas, tomatoes, red cabbage, carrot ribbons, hummus

         Salad 2: spinach, carrot, tomato, red cabbage, baked tofu, nooch, Braggs, ACV

            Salad 3: cucumber, greens mix, bell pepper, tempeh, tomato, carrot, hummus

                                                                Not a salad: bagel.

                                Not a salad 2: GF toast with peanut butter and apricot jam

Salad 4: avocado, spinach, tomato, bell pepper, red cabbage, tempeh, nooch, AVC, hummus

                         Salad 5: red cabbage, mixed greens, split peas, tomatoes, hummus

The Seed Experience and so on

Alternating and on repeat: busy, tired, stressed. But the show must go on. J and I EXPERIENCED THE SEED EXPERIENCE

At the Altman Building. Airy and not crowded! Some of the vendors were weird; I didn't entirely know what to do with myself, but we made the rounds and I got some free samples.

Spotted: Cinnamon Snail truck, pup. Adam Sobel was inside signing copies of the Street Vegan cookbook.

We stopped by the Gone Pie table again, I can't resist it. Jarrod had only ever tasted the GP blondie I brought him from Spreadhouse so it was time to broaden our horizons. We got the salted peanut butter caramel cup to split right away (so it wouldn't melt, ya know.)

And I also picked up the (not so) mini lemon poppyseed cake for later. Good, good stuff. Would have been great with tea and split with a friend but I wolfed it down solo the next day.

Also, this is from a different day, but more J time. We've been seeing movies at a local collective theater a lot recently. Vinnie's Pizzeria is nearby, so, after you feed your mind...

                             my spicy vegan slice with jalapenos, sriracha, and seitan pieces.

                                           he got one of those as well as an avocado slice.
Yet another night, he came over and we ate dinner in. Saving $$, eating greens:

Salad with nooch, olive oil, etc. Pasta with garlic, crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, capers, olive oil. You know how it is.
