Salad Days Indeed

Healthy stuff first, to trick you into thinking that's what I eat most of the time:

Sauteed bok choy with onion, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, red pepper flakes and tossed with lentils. This lunch opened in my bag and soaked my pants so I smelled like it all day.

These Cafe Indigo slices were on sale at Whole Foods! I can't NOT buy sweets on sale, that would be careless!

This lemon-poppy flavor was good, if a little dry. I bought a carrot cake version for Jarrod that looked nice and moist though.
I won tickets to go to the opening night of Salad Days, a new documentary about the DC punk scene in the 80s.

THE MOVIE RULES. Go see it if you can! There was a Q&A after the screening with the director, Michael Hampton from The Faith, and John Joseph of Cro-Mags (and vegan fame)! JJ had some fun stories to tell...

Jarrod came with - we met at Vanessa's first. I got a sesame pancake with grilled tofu. This is kinda like a banh mi on softer bread.

snax for the movie - little Justin's cups

Friday WF bar lunch: steamed kale, roasted butternut squash, steamed beets, chickpeas, garlic miso dressing.

Dinner from last night/lunch today/probably lunch forever since there is SO much: quinoa, chickpeas, sauteed mushrooms with onions, broccoli, soy sauce.
That's all for now. See you soon.

  1. ye olde DC 'punk scene'. talk about your fairy tales. What? Henry Rollins? maybe if you push it, Tommy Keene. The Bok Choy and Lentils look good.

    1. Yes, Henry Rollins! But also Bad Brains, Embrace, Fugazi, Bikini Kill, Youth Brigade, Government Issue, Scream, The Faith, VOID, Soulside, Rites of Spring !! ! ! !!!!!
I mean, I guess it was heavy on the Ian macKaye stuff and there was a lot of overlap with the band members, but those are some legit godparents of punk!
Please tell me you grew up going to those shows!!

    3. I grew up very sheltered in suburban Maryland. There was no crawling out the window for me.

  2. I don't understand how you got leaking lunch tupperware on your pants...? There are certainly worse smells in nyc than salad vinegrette so maybe you were actually lucky there.
Winning anything is fun but great movie tix is even better! I haven't been to Vanessa's in forever but i gotta fix that asap, those sesame pancakes are good stuff.
Have you been to Lula's lately??? Or whatever its called now... This fab weather needs ice cream!

    1. Haha, well, it opened in my bag, which was against my leg...so it leaked through.
Yeah, IFC is $$ so I was stoked! Vanessa's on the other hand is super cheap, so I will be going back for that sandwich often.
I'm not such a big ice cream fan but once it gets nicer I will most likely be stopping by.

  3. I'd always imagined from your posts that you ate pretty much exclusively salads and cake - which is pretty much my ideal diet, except I'm too lazy to make the salad part. I'm guessing the film will probably be headed this way in about 30 years.

  4. I have to track that movie down! Listening to your link to Minor Threat just started my morning off in the most kick ass of ways! We hung a sheet up and projected Princess Bride last night, everyone had seen it a million times so it was really just a comfort watch, our bedtime story. Bummer about the leaking salad, at least it was vegan, ahaha.

    1. So glad! Embrace, minor threat and Fugazi are all huge deals to me... I hope you get to see the movie some day, but Princess Bride is good too.

  6. Aw man, sucks you had salad pants all day! The doc sounds awesome. And even if it was dry, that cake looks awesome. Love that thick layer of frosting.

  7. Has it been a trick all along? Bc I'm pretty sure you're a very healthy eater, although I appreciate you not being careless about bypassing sale goodies. Can we just talk about those Justin's minis? Why are they so good? Is it the proportion?

    1. I try to eat well the majority of the time! This post might have been influenced by pms and Jarrod's snack appreciation.
the proportion of the cups is good, and they are less likely to be dry (a dud Justin is horrible!) but I'm thinking they are good just because they are cute.

  8. Hey! I answered your vegan running shoes question on my blog, but then I figured it might be more helpful to post it here too in case you're in the market for some!

I wear Brooks running shoes (and I also bought Paul some Brooks), and all their running shoes are vegan! Yay! Vegan elite runner Scott Jurek is actually sponsored by Brooks. The only exception are their line of walking shoes, but I just get the running ones. I'm partial to the Brooks Ghost 7. Paul is really digging the Brooks Launch 2.

    1. Thanks Bianca, that's really good to know. I have a vegan pair of Merrells I'm wearing for running but really need a new shoe!
