Staycation Pt. 1

OKay, so turns out vacations go really quickly??? Law of physics; time flies when you aren't at work. I feel like I didn't get all that much done, but here's some evidence of life:

Kashi Go Lean Crunch with banana and coffee with almond milk.

Was debilitated with cramps at least one day, there was lots of raspberry leaf tea (helps "the female system,") here soaking up good vibes on the altar.

Brownie from Rudy's. I managed to only eat half! The rest is in the freezer for an emergency, which I anticipate arising soon.

simple salad: baked tofu, tomatoes, carrot, spinach, lemon juice.

Turns out I didn't even need to buy the brownie though! Look what a magical fairy sent in the mail! Cocomels! Why don't they sell these near me??

I ate the sea salt ones first. So very, very, very good. Thank you magical fairy.

Did some hanging with the Hax.

morning smoothie! This was spinach, matcha, 1/2 a banana, frozen orange, lemon juice, almond milk, and protein powder.
Trader Joe's grocery haul. It had been so long since I'd been in there I was somehow not interested in buying a ton of stuff. Basics mostly: GF bread, jam, vitamins, crackers, lower sodium pistachios, sundried tomatoes, almond milk, coffee, dark chocolate cherries, (2) tempeh, tofu.

Baked cornbread. With blueberries in it. That was part Raechel and part Ingrid.

Was grateful to be home to see this sunset since most days I'm in a basement at that magic hour.

Hung out with my friend. He accidentally got someone else's fancy Wild Alaskan Salmon in his groceries so he gave it to me to give to Hax. She was pretty excited about that.

Another smoothie. Spinach, frozen banana, blueberry, protein powder, lemon.

Got tattooed. This is the walk through McCarren park back to the train, in lieu of a picture of the still healing tattoo.

Then I ate a gigantic, delicious salad to help heal as soon as possible. This is spinach, red cabbage, avocado, tomato, sweet potato, and baked tofu with a tahini dressing.
And that was basically that. I'm meeting a friend for some drinks in a few; it's back to the grind tomorrow (though for only 3 days :)

Boring Food bookended by ART

I'm on vacation! Well, I have a four day weekend twice this month, to break up the monotony. So hopefully there will be a fair amount of cooking projects, though I'm also working on as much visual art and creative writing as possible.

This is what my desk looks like right now...
But I'm also going to try to explore the city a little bit more and share that with you. Like a mini MoFo! In the dead of winter!
But let's get the regular stuff out of the way first:

Raw collards, kidney beans, sweet potato. Srirached after the photo. Can we get that word in the dictionary, please?

From the vending machine at work! They are stepping up their game. Vegans are probably the only people who look at the stuff in a vending machine and go back to their desk to google the ingredients in a product before purchasing a snack. Such a hard life.

                                                 Quick breakfast. Cool roommate's mug.

Avo toast with black salt!, cayenne, and hemp seeds. Terri Romero posted a photo recently of some SERIOUSLY decked out avo toast with crushed pepitas, hemp seeds, nooch, spices, and oil but for now I think my version is good. (She is also writing a vegan protein book! which I am not.) Ooh, maybe I could add some garlic powder, though.

more kidney beans and sweet potato over raw broccoli.

Snowy vegan carrot-raisin cookies at the Union Square Farmer's market. Yes, I bought one.

                                                         Snowy but still going strong

Another Tofurky sandwich with cucumber slices, spinach, kraut, and mustard before heading out to THE WRONG SHOW! I went to a venue a full week before the bands I wanted to see were gonna play! Haha, but it was a cool night anyway - saw this mystical trio on a Twin Peaks-esque set playing lounge-y Psychic TV-type stuff. They lit incense and a candle and were mostly just synth and vocals. It was great but I can't figure out who they are!

There is a person dressed all in white holding up the moons while the man in black croons.
                                                                      See you soon.

Savories (ok, one sweet)

I'm surprised I don't see V8 more on the blogs. I mean, I guess I don't drink it all that often either but it's a pretty healthyish snack. High in sodium, but full of veggies. And cheaper than a fresh-pressed juice, which are almost always sweet anyway.

I always opt for the spicy one if I can find it.

The last of Isa's curry, over spinach instead of rice.

Grocery haul: bread, cucumbers, olive hummus, organic tomatoes, bananas, a bag of carrots, and 2 Tofurky deli slices. They were on sale, 2 for $5.

Kashi GoLean Crunch, also on sale, peanut butter, tofu, sweet potatoes, spinach, avocados, and broccoli. $36.74 for the lot.

collard wrap with hummus, tomatoes, shaved carrot, and avocado.

Half a homemade Reuben approximation. Tofurky slices, avocado, mustard, and sauerkraut.

And, la piece de resistance: a vegan carrot cake cupcake from Rudy's.

Breakfasts and NO BUNNIES

Gosh, I just eat so much, I can't keep up.

Slices of the lemon-blueberry loaf. It has berries, so you can eat it for breakfast.

          Spinach-vanilla protein powder-frozen banana-coconut milk-lemon smoothie

Sesame seed bagel with tofu cream cheese. They accidentally toasted it, and offered another but I didn't want to waste a bagel. I don't usually get my bagels toasted because the cc melts and I think it takes away from the chewiness. In any case, this was my last one for a while because I gave up bagels for Lent :( I kinda had been too heavily relying on them.

Today's breakfast, cooked creamy buckwheat with blueberries and hemp seeds. Coffee also.

I passed this horrible pet store while out getting groceries today. They usually have sad, wilted, puppy mill puppies in the window but now they've switched it to rabbits so that people will get excited about Spring and Easter and buy a rabbit, only to realize they have no idea how to care for one or don't really want it, and then discard it after the holiday. Animals are not seasonal toys!!

Berries and Bowls

Last couple days' highlights:

                                                               cuddles with the fuzz

Wandering, stopping into bars because it started snowing.

Gena-influenced: raw collard salad, adzuki beans, sauerkraut, spicy hummus
Spaghetti over soy sauced broccoli, scallion, mushroom, and carrot with a peanut sauce

Another Isa recipe! So sue me! This was a dessert from Isa Does It, blueberry lemon loaf. I hadn't made any of the desserts in that book! Am I whack or what? It is currently cooling in my well-used kitchen.
Wonder what'll happen tomorrow. Enjoy yr extra day off, if you have it.

Vegantine's Day

Friday night after work my friend and I went out to John's of 12th Street, an old school Italian place founded 1908 that has successfully branched out to another crowd with a special all-vegan menu! Perhaps being right next door to Angelica's Kitchen influenced them?
In any case, well done. Except for the lighting, which was still very old school and needed a flash. Apologies for that.

                                                             The cavernous back room

                                                    The large drippy candle sculpture

Water and our carafe of wine

A basket of vegan garlic bread to start

and a split appetizer of grilled portobello mushrooms

I got Seitan alla rosa with roasted red peppers, artichokes, and mushrooms in marsala sauce. This was tastier than it was appealing to the eye.

and a cannoli for dessert. Seeing as how John's is close to Atlas Cafe, I thought their cannoli might be from Vegan Treats, but it looks like they make their own! They offer vanilla or chocolate. This is vanilla, but had a distinct cinnamon flavor. I believe the filling is cashew based?
The next morning I headed out to the Pine Box Rock Shop vegan pop-up shop.

Had a Holiday in Cambodia Bloody Mary: soy sauce in the booze, pickled green bean, pickled cauliflower, lemon slice, mango, pineapple, basil, and kalamata olives. Then I perused the tables. It was crowded as ever in there, and I wanted to get out as soon as I could. Nothing looked particularly enticing anyway.

...except for the Gone Pie table :) Said hello to Barbara and bought an almond chai brownie and a chocolate mint heart.
Happy, happy Valentine's. A compassionate heart is a healthy heart!
