Tea time with Poem

Like I mentioned recently, my days off of late have been spent hunched over and freaking out at my computer trying to finish up some poetry in time to submit a manuscript (Also now might be a time to say, Props to Jes.) To get me through the later part of the day, I've taken to drinking lots and lots of tea. And what is tea without something sweet? Realizing I had a bunch of dates that were hanging around, just getting softer and softer, I remembered a Dynise Balcavage recipe for cinnamon-date scones, which sounded perfect. Fittingly, they are in the Snow Day section of her most recent cookbook, Celebrate Vegan.



Extreme close-up!!! Look at all that amazing chewy, sweet, date goodness. Although I followed the recipe for these scones EXACTLY, which is something I rarely do, I might cut back on the sugar just slightly next time. And, if I had any, walnuts most definitely would have been thrown in.
These scones are dense but not at all dry and are perfectly cinnamonly spiced. I have just enough dates left to make a second batch, which is also good news since my tea stash is also beginning to get out of hand... English breakfast, Vanilla Cinnamon black, St. John's Wort, Dandelion root, ginger tea, and various medicinal types as well (Raspberry leaf, chocolate laxative, Detox fasting tea.)
HHhhaaaannyway, to celebrate having finally finished the book, I thought I'd share a poem with you. Read while drinking tea! Or not.

Fooled Again

Jack Frost came back in a
Jack Flash our
Coldly numbed busy hands
Fumbling with the buttons on our
Light Spring cardigans
Forcing a grin while grumbling about.
Here’s Puxtawney Phil
And we certainly do feel we’ve had our fill
But what can we do but bundle up
Head down and barrel our ways through
Winter’s last
Remaining days?
We could use a few more muffled hours
Of purity.
Let us not forget to scatter some
Feed for the birds on barren branches in trees
Who have been fooled, too,
Their small throats aching to sing.
The one small bud however of a
Tiny crocus flower, well, she’ll have to wait
For the real thing.

Lentils and Barley 'til March

Breakfasts:
                                                                    Banananananana

                                                         Still heaven on toasted rye.

One day I wanna go to a cafe and order a fancy latte to stay and sip and they will put pretty designs in the foam but until then I will just drink bubbly single serve french press made by moi.

Now That's What I Call a Bagel. From a real bagel store. Nothing fancy: sesame with plain tofu cream cheese. I had to miss work Thursday to see a doctor and went in on a Sunday to make the time up. To console myself I wolfed this baby down. The coffee above I brought with me though, cuz God love em but bagel stores make great bagels & shitty coffee; leave the coffee to coffee shops.

Like I said, I had to go to the doctor. They put me on antibiotics for a while and I tried to get the good -bodies back in with this Good Belly stuff. I feel like it helped; it also didn't hurt that it tastes pretty good anyway.

                                      Lotsa blackberries have been in the snack rotation.

And these Key Lime flavor Larabars. Not one of my usual flavors but very good - and it takes me on a tropical trip while I pretend it's not freezing outside.

Also keeping us warm is this quick soup I threw together for G one night. Leftover barley and lentils thrown into a pot with sauteed onion and kale, with vegetable broth.

Another quick lunch salad. I am not good at grocery shopping these days I guess. If I had a plant that produced food that I could pick and eat, that would be cool - not so into going outside and stuff. This is cooked lentils, raw zucchini, and cherry tomatoes. Tossed with grain mustard later.

And finally, something special! This was so delicious. The extra, like, 10 minutes I put into actually heating up a dinner after work was really worth it, whoda thunk? This is broccoli and zucchini stir-fried with garlic, salt, and olive oil and topped with warm barley. While the vegetables cooked, I mixed together tahini, water, nooch, cayenne pepper, and paprika for a smoky, creamy, almost cheesy sauce. So so good. When it's all mixed together it's like a super vegetable mac and cheese dish. I made this two nights in a row- the second night with kale- and now I'm out of tahini but I will definitely continue making this on cold evenings. It's comforting and hearty but totally healthy too.

Scenes from a Life

Night walks under full moon.


It was cold and I was pressed for time to make lunch and I dunno some evil spirit posessed me to buy this:


                                 Pretty much what you'd expect if you had zero expectations.

       Raw kale, sweet potato, zuczhini, lentils, tomatoes, tahini dressing. A mess but good.

                                          Beets, barley, broccoli, lentils with nooch.

                                 Snow storm out into which I ventured. It was a labor of love.

                                This lil lady knows how to keep warm. Best spot in the house.

Stay strong. It's almost the weekend. Though I'll be working through the weekend. Whatever, stay warm at least.

Putting Kale to Good Use

Three days, three breakfasts:

                                                   Oatmeal with blackberries

                                                                   Banana with
                                          GF toast with Earth Balance and apricot jam

It's been so long since I've had a smoothie! But I was going crazy everytime I opened the freezer and saw old, brown bananas. In here is about 1 1/2 bananas, 1 c. kale, cranberries, raw vegan vanilla chai protein powder, tahini, ginger, a sqeeze of lemon, and spirulina. Coffee in the background.

Lunch from the other day, all mixed up and colorful. Raw kale, roasted beets, sweet potato, sundried tomato, and lentils in a tahini dressing. This was especially delicious because I had to wait an extra day to eat it. On Friday I forgot I had to fast for a doctor's appointment so I made the lunch and looked longingly at it, but could not eat it. At least I didn't have to prep something for the next day? I drank Yogi fasting tea instead.
Temperatures did warm up briefly but it's also nice to have some warming foods. I've been drinking tea when I get home to help myself focus and write and it's nice to have a sweet treat with it. Thus, drugstore cookies. Similar to the maple sandwich cookies they have at Trader Joe's, but a little less sweet. Like tea time, but not as spectacular as Joey's.


Also warming: miso soup.

The winter also dries me out a lot - I am always thirsty and my skin gets really dry and itchy. I bought cucumbers to put on my skin and in water. Not the same slices. This cucumber water also has lemon juice squeezed in:


Like I said, writing and tea and tea and writing. I've been holed up in my room all day emerging for a quick lunch.

A Couple Days Worth

Blah wit da blah da bang da bang blahby blahby:

Spinach, tempeh, Japanese sweet potato, sundried tomatoes, dried cranberries with nooch and Braggs.

A similar salad with more cooked components: spinach, brown rice, lentils, sweet potato, sundried tomatoes, Braggs and nooch.

The last of the TJ bagels. Never again will I give in. Vegan cream cheese on the left, Earth Balance on the right (the last of two containers.) TERMINATOR COFFEE.

From Brownies to Blondies, and everything in between

Raw kale, chickpeas, dressed with sriracha and tahini. Plastic fork. If this photo is underwhelming, it's because the meal was. Unfortunately it lasted three days. Like an anti-miracle.

This meal, however, was a lot tastier than it looks. Raw kale, shredded beets, rice, tempeh, capers, Braggs, and nooch.

This raw cherry pie bar was the product of a $50 dollar Christmas bonus from work. Delicious, but not something I would buy with my own money.

                 Toasted TJs sesame bagel with TJs vegan cream cheese, tomatoes, spinach.


I made mushroom barley soup for those super cold days earlier in the week. Super simple recipe, based on one from Martha Rose Shulman's NYTimes Recipes for Health cookbook. I added lentils too.

Brownies from Colleen Patrick-Goudreau's Joy of Vegan Baking. Hot damn were these tasty. And no added fat! It's all applesauce!

                     Spinach, tomato, sweet potato, tempeh salad. With Braggs and nooch.

                       Thai Lime Chili roasted cashews from Trader Joes. They grew on me.

Spinach, cabbage, carrot, mushroom, tempeh, sundried tomato salad. With hummus dressing later.

From Paradis! It had been a while! Escarole, spinach, roasted cauliflower, roasted almonds, balsamic cooked onions. Fa REALS.

Shen made me do it. A hemp seed blondie from Le Pain Quotidien. Hopefully these won't become my daily bread because they are pricey, but very good. And bigger than the photo would lead one to believe.

This is what the mushroom barley soup helped with. Pretty frost design, yes, but this is INSIDE the apartment. And next to a radiator too! Today I ate lunch outside, though, so I guess things are getting back to "normal" temps, whatever that means for global warming times.
