B.W.L, A.W.L.

I lost my wallet monday night, that sucked. Since I don't have an ID or my credit/debit cards, I am kinda subsisting on whatever money I had on my person. Which is kinda cool - like a necessary frugality challenge, except more annoying. Luckily I had just done all that grocery shopping so I was prepared food-wise at least.
Here's some stuff I was eating while still with $$, last week or so, a bit before the shopping hauls.

special pink! coconut water. mixed with barley grass, wheatgrass and alfalfa powder

toasted rye bread with Earth Balance and an orange.

WF bar lunch: mixed greens, carrots, mushrooms, tomatoes, spicy barbeque tofu

This was plasticky. Do not recommend.

***AFTER WALLET LOSS***   ***LOTS MORE MEALS FROM HOME***

spinach, chipotle baked beans, 1/2 sweet potato, cornbread

arugula, tempeh, avocado, persimmon, carrot, sundried tomato in Isa's orange vinaigrette. This was a fantastic salad with lots of different textures and a perfect balance of flavor. The dressing tasted way better and much less flat after having sat in the fridge a couple more days.

steamed kale, baked tofu, roasted eggplant from WF bar. I added my own roasted sweet potato. This was a big of a splurge but I went to see Sebadoh again last night and didn't have much prep time before I had to rush out the door this morning.
And, yes, they were as incredible as ever. Gimme Indie Rock!

The last of the chipotle baked beans with coleslaw over spinach. The coleslaw is based off a Dynise Balcavage recipe in Celebrate Vegan - cabbage, fennel, carrot, agave, caraway seeds, white vinegar, s+p.

cold coffee with almond milk, TJ's Everything bagel with tofu cream cheese. I was lying when I said TJs bagels weren't bad. They need to be toasted to be edible. Sadly I forgot my coffee at home and had to spend $2.50 that morning to function.

spinach, tempeh, sweet potato, carrot, sundried tomato, avocado with Braggs, cayenne, and nooch.

                                                                 never-fail breakfast.

This Suja Glow juice was another splurge I really didn't need to buy, but I've been curious about them and they were on sale 40% off so I HAD TO grab one. Pretty good and refreshing. Tasty yet clean tasting. I'd buy it again if it were on sale.

I can't get enough of the Fall sun in yellowy trees and clear blue skies.

Haxan did not put up with a costume for Halloween but she did manage to look like Halloween personified (catified?) What a cute witch.

  1. Wow! There is so much in this post - but first, have you been able to recover from the lost wallet? You ate beautifully pre and post wallet loss, and I was thinking this week of eating more mixed bowls. I'm going to try to incorporate more sweet potatoes into my diet, as I know they are so good for us, even though I don't love them.

I'm having the opposite coffee problem: I'm drinking it at work, and one of my co-workers always gets to work super early and makes the coffee. . .it's like Starbucks strength, which doesn't bother him because he dumps in a lot of cream and sugar. Ugh.

Agreed on the Suja: only when on sale!

    Hi Haxan! :)

    1. maybe there is too much in this post, haha. Could have organized it better...or at least spread it out into two posts.
The wallet thing is annoying but I'm on my way back to normalcy in that area.
Sweet potatoes are so amazing and they go with everything! You can go sweet or savory! Plus keep up a sunny glow into the sad, gray winter months.
Do you take the work coffee black? I keep soy milk in the work fridge but it mostly goes unused since I bring my own. I forget why I thought I needed that...
      Have you tried the Suja??

  2. Yikes, dude! Thats a terrible situation. I hope you can get all your wallet contents replaced soon! HOWEVER I will also say that baked beans w sweet potato, greens, & cornbread sounds like roughly the best meal ever right about now. NOM.

    1. Thanks.. I wasn't super worried about it at first because the Universe has been good and returned my wallet in the past but I've given up on the Good Samaritan this time around. Really can only blame myself.
The beans, sweet potato, and baked beans were "where it's at." Cooked greens might have been better than baby spinach but I was glad to have the veg.

  3. Bummer about the wallet. It's so disorienting — not to mention inconvenient and exhausting — to lose a wallet. At least you've managed to carry on and keep eating colorful nourishing food. The kale, tofu, eggplant + sweet potato really appeals to me — I'm always attracted to dishes that contain tofu.

    1. Inconvenient and exhausting is right. It's very unsettling, too, knowing all yr personal information is out there. Eh. Trying not to obsess over it.
The tofu in that dish was especially good. Well baked but still nice and spongy inside.

  4. You are handling this loss of wallet situation incredibly well -- eating tons of great food and going to concerts and what not. Great pic of Haxan on the balcony, I didn't realize the Pumpkin was so small.

Sebadoh are playing The Black Cat on U Street tonight. I'd never have noticed that except you keep mentioning them.

Also, told ya so about those TJ's Bagels. Lame.

    1. It's happened so many times by now that I really ought to have learned my lesson, but at least I am grateful it wasn't anything worse. The metrocard was the worst and most expensive loss - one more reason yr better off not in NYC - but it made me more aware of how much money I spend and reminded me I DO NOT need pink coconut water!!
Speaking of, if I had more money, I would follow Sebadoh on every date of this tour. How fitting that they're playing at the Black Cat! I dunno if you watched the video but there's a cat in there too.... Haxan is a stubby little wee thing too but I guess the angle makes the pumpkin look small.
I plan to toast the bagel tomorrow. Should I go the cream cheese route or the Earth Balance route?

  5. So sorry to hear about the lost wallet, Maud. Such a hassle, hey? Suckysuckysucky. But you have cornbread, at least! Yay cornbread!

  6. Total suckdom about the wallet. Damn. Thank God for toastable bagels and a cup of Joe!

    1. Another Bullshit Night in Suck City. So it goes. The coffee helped ease the pain, for sure, though.

  7. The lost wallet sucks! My bank replaced my debit card on the spot, weird yours didnt. If you go online there's a way to get the metrocard replaced- they can look up how/when you paid for it and issue a new one- its a bit of a hassle but worth it if you had much on there.
Your meals all look delicious! Esp the big salad with avocado and the whole foods tofu one. I've been tempted by the suja juices, haven't tried them yet. Whole foods has juices by Columbia Gorge that are much cheaper, like $5-6, for 16oz size, those have all been very good.
    The concert sounds great!

    1. Well, my bank wouldn't replace it without ID, which I also lost... I've since gotten my passport but I already sent away in the mail for the cards. Since it was the weekend the banks weren't open but tomorrow I should be able to take out cash. And the metrocard is a problem because I need to know the # of the card, which I don't have memorized! Bureaucracy is so caught up in itself in a ridiculous circle; it makes me so mad. Oh well. my own dumb fault.
Anyway, digging the avocado/sweet potato combo hard lately! Especially with tempeh making a textural contrast. I like the all-veg Columbia Gorge but haven't seen it lately. The Sujas on sale were actually .50 cents cheaper than the Evolution juices I've been into recently. Tasty too.

  8. Ugh, a lost wallet is no fun. Haxan doesn't have a wallet, though, and she makes do. Well, via her benefactor. I hope everything gets sorted out soon with minimal headache.

Thanks for the head's up on the candy bar. Bad chocolate is not good. Keep an eye out for the Eli's Earth bars; they're great, but I haven't spied them in NY yet.

    1. You know what's so funny?? I spent no money on myself yesterday but then realized I had to buy cat food so I spent 3 dollars of my 9 dollars (until today) on Haxan!
I've heard good things about those chocolate bars... will definitely look around, though I've been thinking about ordering a few things online anyway - can I find them online? I need to buy liquid smoke too and can't find it anywhere!

  9. Sorry about the wallet-- that must have been awful. But your food finds look amazing. And Haxan is definitely the cutest little witch ever! :)

  10. Oh no!! I'm so sorry about your wallet, that really sucks :( I'm glad you were well stocked though, I'm sure it made a crappy situation just a little easier. Nonetheless, I know it must have been incredibly exhausting and frustrating to deal with. I would have FLIPPED OUT. You are handling it very well.

Your food looks incredible! I LOVE that brand of coconut water. It's the only bottled one I like. It is so delicious. Boo for crappy chocolate but yay for concerts! I haven't been to a concert in years, that is sad and should be remedied. Haxan is so freaking cute.

    1. Yeah, I've been through it so many times before that flipping out just isn't worth it.
The coconut water is really great, isn't it? Do you buy another brand that isn't bottled?
music and food are the two things I spend my money on these days. Concerts are so much fun. I hope you get to one soon!

    2. I've only ever had Vita Coco and Zico and both are gross. The raw coconut water is a lot sweeter and doesn't smell or taste like sweat... which is what I'm reminded of when I drink the other brands. I haven't had the patience to attempt to actually open a fresh coconut.

  11. love the poses Haxan is striking there! And considering you lost your wallet, those meals didn't look half bad - I think I'd be eating rice and oil for a week if I had to subsist out of my cupboard!

  12. Sorry to hear about your wallet - thanks goodness that there aren’t anything important in it. However, the raw coconut water sounds really good! I love toasted rye bread with Earth Balance - mmmm and what a great deal on the Suja Juice! Was it your favorite flavor?
