MoFo 2013, day 19: Columbia Farmers Market + Shenwich

Today was another new Farmers Market stop, on the Upper West Side near Columbia University. It was nice to visit another part of the city that I so, so rarely get to and who knows, maybe I soaked up some of the smarts in the air on campus.

                                                                       The library
Or maybe just some of the neuroses?

Speaking of Seinfeld (I was) look what I found at the market! Look to the cookie!

The market is small - and I actually was confused and thought that I'd been to this market before but it looked totally different. Most of the produce was stuff you (and I) have already seen before. There were some nice looking early squashes, some broccoli I considered, and still plenty of tomatoes, corn, and eggplant (including a teensy Thai eggplant you can apparently eat raw.)

                                                                  Tiny little squash!
                                                                 gooseneck squash

However, it was a warm day and I didn't want to stay inside doing a lot of prep, or even heating food. The first thing I thought of was an intriguing seasonal lunch from everyone's favorite blogger, The Shenandoah Vegan and her radish sandwich. Definitely not something I would have thought to make, but looks refreshing every time I see it.
Haxan had to first inspect the produce:

Three dollars for this bunch. I was determined not to waste a bit and as the leaves were in pretty good shape, I sauteed those up with some garlic and olive oil.

Toasted gluten-free brown rice bread and Sabra olive tapenade hummus came into play as well. I learned last time I bought radishes that they go really well with olive hummus.

This was really quick and filling and great. The only thing that detracted from the sandwich was that the leaves were still gritty. Wash them well! Don't be lazy like me. I'll just pretend it was pepper...

  1. The little farm market wasn't the only thing you were confused about. I've never had a Hummus & Radish Sandwich in my life. I do appreciate the shout out since maybe I'll get a few new fans out of this misinformation you're spreading. I'm cool with it basically.

The restaurant made sure to put 'Jerry', 'George' etc outside of it to make sure everyone recognized it. Tacky.

    Haxan looks really cute.

    1. Well, no, but I'd never put radishes on a sandwich otherwise. Considered buying Tofutti but I already had the hummus.
It is pretty tacky, actually. And the outdoor seating?! That's new.
Haxan IS really cute. She almost nibbled on a radish root.

    2. I have to be honest; I thought Shenandoah put the radishes. Definitely pickles.

As for Haxan, "almost"? Come on. He can do better.

    3. Shen's sandwich was radishes + Tofutti but I didn't want to buy Tofutti since I already had the huMMus. Wonder what olive hummus would taste like with pickles...

  3. I'm not sure I've ever had radish leaves, but your sandwich looks fantastic, except for the grit, but I can't see that. I saw something really odd at the farmers market Wednesday. I should have bought it to show you in a photo, but didn't. It was small, red eggplants that looked exactly like tomatoes. I still can't believe they were eggplants. Maybe I'll go next week and get some.

    1. Interesting! I'd like to see those eggplants. The tiny ones you could eat raw that I saw were lime green.

  4. Yum! Radish sandwich is brilliant, even if Shen doesn't want any credit :)

I also love that you used the leaves. I didn't know they were edible. I should start looking things up before tossing them in the compost bin.

    1. I guess I've known that the leaves are edible, but they're usually pretty beat up and not so enticing. You wouldn't think they were because of the tiny bristles on them, but I guess they're like nettles. It's so cool when you can use up an entire plant, but at least you've been composting them.

  5. Radish sandwich is a new one on me, but I can see it would be a tasty one. Love them with umeboshi vinegar. And black pepper. Lots of lovely black pepper...

    1. It was tasty! Crunchy and cool. Black pepper and umeboshi vinegar go with almost everything, don't they?

  6. good god is that gooseneck squash adorable! I want to hug it. And the gritty greens thing...that has totally happened to me and it is quite upsetting. It's usually cilantro's fault. Not fun chewing on sand!

    1. Nothing good comes from cilantro!

    2. Right? A lot of squash seem like toys to me... Not sure why. And yeah the sand was pretty annoying. It's so hard to wash it all off.

  7. No grit! I can't even. I. just. can't. In other news, were you implying that the b/w cookie was vegan? I need a vegan b/w cookie in my life: today and ever day! P.S. Eat it, Haxan!!

    1. Sadly, the B&W cookie was not vegan but there's always the recipe in VCIYCJ for you to make!! ;)

  8. I am still focusing on my favorite cookie of all time, black and whites.
I was thinking you picked up some smarts and then I saw your dirty sandwich.

  9. Ooooh another beautiful market! ANd yes I agree, the Jerry, George, etc. outside of the diner is pretty tacky. But people get suckered in by it right? Anyway, nice to see the radish sandwich phenomenon spreading! Haxan is such a sweetie :)

    1. Now I wonder which one I've been to that I thought was this one...
People totally get sucked by the signs, I'm sure that's why they did it. Oh well.

  10. You paid $3 for radishes??!? I mean, they look gorgeous but still......and i have totally done the gritty greens by my impatient washing. Didn't stop me from eating them either! I juiced my beet greens yesterday, but for some reason i think you're not supposed to......?
Looks like a cute market for the area! Have you been to the one at Thompkins sq park in the waaay east village? There were some good apples there last wknd

    1. That's why I had to use every last bit, ha! Never heard that you CAN'T juice beet greens but it might not be common. I think it's just supposed to be really powerful and some people feel uncomfortable. Hope you're still with us.
I just went to the Tompkins market last Sunday! Wonder if we crossed paths! It was pretty nice but I didn't pick up any apples.

  11. What an awesome post! I would like to relive this day with you, check out Columbia, say "hi" to Jerry, and peruse the market! Oh yes, and cuddle Haxan. I am totally guilty of doing a loose wash and having a little grit with my meal! Ha!
