Summer Cooked a Fire in my Brain, Meanwhile I Ate

Dried Turkish figs. A fly got caught in the bag and now I don't want to eat the rest of them because I'm paranoid it laid eggs in the figs but apparently that's how figs are fertilized anyway, or something??
G and I made ramen and stir fry. It was good but I freaked out about cleaning and vegetables and noodles. Sometimes eating is really stressful.

From Paradis. Curried red lentils, jicama, heirloom tomatoes, spinach.

Collard wrap with tofu, sundried tomato hummus, mushrooms, and tomato. I had a second wrap and added carrots and sriracha. The hummus looked really gross and then I didn't want to eat anymore ever.

Chocolate chip cookie from Peacefood. As soon as I stepped outside, the chips started melting. It's hot, guys.

Raw broccoli, kimchee, tofu. Thrown together last minute in the morning. Sometimes it's hard to care about food.

Whole Foods had 16 oz of organic strawberries on sale for two dollars the other day! Yeeeaaahhhh. I ate those and tossed some blueberries in for good antioxidant measure. I rarely buy strawberries but whenever I do, I'm reminded of how they whiten teeth... although maybe the blueberries counteracted that.
This is pretty much everything I've been eating. This is the part of the summer where food either makes me feel insane or I just don't want to eat anything at all. I did go to a Mets game the other night, though, and ate a lot of peanuts.

Also this from yesterday:

The slightest rainbow. I didn't eat any Lucky Charms.
Uuugghh does making food decisions or eating at all ever stress you guys out? I can't deal with this right now hahah okay bye!

  1. I have a really hard time with stuff like flies, too. If I even think one landed on my food, I rarely eat it after that.

It has been hard to even think about food, but you certainly have been eating well!

Pretty rainbow. I love seeing them. <3

    1. Yeah! Don't they barf every time they land? I feel like I have an Urban Legend-level understanding of biology though. Who knows.

  2. I sympathize about the heat. It can really mess with the part of your brain that urges you to cook and eat. Sometimes I can only eat grape tomatoes and peaches. Here in the PNW, it doesn't get too hot very often, so it's not much of an issue.

I get the fly thing. We used to order a 10 pound box of Little Bear chips from our food co-op (yeah, I know) and keep it in the basement. One time I found a dead mouse trapped inside the plastic bag, and we had to throw away the whole box.

    1. Grape tomatoes and peaches sound great. I should up my cucumber intake.
YUCK YUCK YUCK to the mouse. I'd never be able to eat those chips again.

    2. I didn't even mention all the tiny baby mice that appeared in our kitchen after the mom died.

  3. I think you and I share many of the same food hangups. I saw a little fly in a container of blackberries and I immediately threw the whole thing away. I also definitely know what it's like to be so hot that I don't want to eat. Looks like you've been coping pretty well though because these are some gorgeous meals you've been eating! The ramen stir fry looks delicious and hooray for raw wraps!

So great that you got to the Mets game! Nosebleed seats are definitely the most fun :) How did you like the Peacefood cookie?

    1. Definitely. I hate to waste stuff but I'm too paranoid sometimes not to.
The Peacefood cookie is DELICIOUS! I hope you can try one soon.

  4. Food is totally stressful when it is so mother-lovin HOT!
Looks like your effort was worth it on the ramen and stirfry there with all the veggies too. The lentil meal from paradis sounds amazing, i seek out jicama as often as possible. Why does the hummus gross you out? Sounds like a good flavor, especially in the collard wraps. I actually burnt out on hummus a few years back, we had to take a break from each other. (Lasted a whole year!)

    1. I do believe this was my first time eating jicama! Pretty interesting and definitely cooling. The hummus was...the exact texture and color of feces, so.....yeah. Other types of hummus are wonderful.

  5. I agree - thinking about anything while hot is ridiculous. Which is why I don't understand the reason for not installing some sort of cooling mechanism in schools ("students: we don't care how hot you are, learn dammit!" - Sincerely, all administrators and politicians sitting in air conditioned offices.)

Anyway, I applaud your meals. I like the idea of noodles and veggies - did you add a sauce? I only buy berries when they are on sale, and savor them when I do!

    Hooray for baseball! And rainbows!

    1. The ramen and veggies had soy sauce...ginger juice...and some sriracha. I think that was it sauce-wise.
I hope you can make it to another Rockies game before the summer is up.

  6. Waaah! The Chips in my $5 Cookie are melty! Waaaah! A fly landed on my Turkish Fig! Waaaah!

Sorry to be unsympathetic, but if you just bought this instead of baseball tickets, you and your readers would be a lot happier:

    1. The cookie was less than $1.50 and the baseball tickets were Groupons for $16 which comes to more than $100 less than an A/C plus no global warming, and no deadly electric bill. So.

  7. Oh lordy. I don't think I'll ever be able to enjoy the crunch of dried fig seeds again.

  8. Yum, everything looks delicious. I definitely get a bit meh about making food when it's too hot to cook - I usually just eat a million sandwiches and Clif bars!

  9. Put those figs in the freezer! That way even if there was any actual fly egg action, they'll never hatch. Plus then you get bonus cold chewy fig action. I think figs are actually fertilized by wasps, although as far as I remember it was only one specific variety.

    1. Cold figs sound brilliant!!! Why haven't I been doing that all along?? Yeah, I think it's Calymira (sp?) figs

  10. When food decision-making gets too stressful, I just stop buying stuff and try and just use up what I've got. After a few weird combos, it usually just ends up as salads or sandwiches. Actually, wait a minute, that doesn't sound less stressful at all! And don't chuck the figs - they'll be fine!

  11. Look at this collection of vegan eats! I'm digging the kimchi tofu! Miam miam miam! I never tried the dried Turkish figs, except for those yummy Turkish delights! What did they taste like? x

    1. Oh boy I love Turkish delight but this isn't like that, really. They're just sweeter than Black mission figs. Chewy and nice.

  12. Melty or not, I want the Peacefood cookie SANDWICH now, so thanks for that.

I know what you're saying about ultra-scrubbing your fruits and veggies; this is why meal preparation takes me hours. I gotta hope restaurants are doing the same thing (just go with me here).

But with the heat, I'm just cooking on Mondays and eating leftovers the rest of the week. Cause monotony is better than the oven.

PS best time to have a Vitamix!

    1. They have some great looking stuff in that bakery case.
I try not to even think about restaurant kitchens. monotony ftw.
