A Glut of Goods

Despite having a salad in the fridge waiting to be eaten, and despite needing to save dollahs, G and I went out to eat again and took a glut of photos of delicious, delicious Beyond Sushi.

Green machine (cucumber, asparagus, basil marinated veggies, 6 grain rice with wasabi mayo) on the left, Roll of the month on the right (avocado, roasted eggplant, arugula, topped with white bean puree and a tomatoey sauce!!!!) How do they come up with this stuff?? Also two pieces of the month, roasted eggplant with sumac.  The white bean/eggplant piece was seriously incredible. Why can't it be an all the time roll??
More pics. Get jealous.

After seeing G's cannoli picture from the wedding, Abby Bean mentioned Vegan Treats' cannolis. I, too, used to LOVE cannolis so I paid the money and embraced the gluttony.

One for me, one for G.

I got these from the Vegan Treats outpost in NY, Atlas Cafe on 2nd ave and 4th. It was the first time I've ever actually bought anything from there. Looks like they have a lot of tasty stuff.
As for the cannoli, sadly, I was underwhelmed. I remember cannolis being crunchy and probably due to the unfortunate temperatures in the city this past week, the crust part was soft and didn't really taste so fresh. They should store the cannolis in the fridge.

The inside was also way too sweet. I remember the filling as almondy-flavored...no? This just tasted like sugar and butter. Sad.
To counter-balance the cannolis, some greenery. My friend happened to have his own glut of goods: an overflowing CSA fridge. He brought me some red leaf lettuce and sugar snap peas. Thanks Matthew!

Look who came with the lettuce!

I made a big salad with the head of lettuce that lasted two lunches:

Day one, eating most of the lettuce out first. Lettuce, cucumber, broccoli, tomatoes, sunflower seeds, nooch, Braggs, cayenne.

Day two, with the addition of falafel.

  1. SUSHI! I miss the good veggie sushi we used to get in NY. Here is all "Sure you can have interesting veggie sushi! Just get on this train for an hour and a half and you'll be in San Francisco, where it lives."

    1. I don't get sushi at too many different places - just here and now my standards are probably too high. I would think Cali would have good sushi all over the place!

  2. I want that sushi. Wow. So far, the vegan options for sushi in Portland have been bleh. Maybe I haven't found the right spot yet, but I want something like what you had. Yum yum yum. I could eat all of that by myself.

Bummer about the cannoli. I agree, they should be crunchy and slightly sweet. And cold.

    1. I think the other Portland options you have outweigh the sushi in NY... but we'll call it even :)

  3. Oh man, that sushi looks delicious!! You were right, I was pretty jealous ;) Beautiful rolls, they have such great presentation! Everything looked really fresh too. Yummy.

Too bad about the cannolis! They looked so promising! That's one thing I always wanted to try and veganize but it was always such a daunting task. A soggy shell is the worst! This is definitely a season to refrigerate your baked good. Damn humidity.

Beautiful salads! Falafel is such a great topper :)

    1. Oh God, I would NEVER ever try to make my own cannolis but you have more patience and skill with that stuff than I do. The soggy shell was a bummer but it could have been worse.
Falafel is usually a great topper, unfortunately these were a little salty.

  4. Oh no; the sight of your smushy cannoli is HEARTBREAKING! The cannolis are definitely supposed to be in the fridge!!! I agree that the filling is not authentic (the original is mainly ricotta and confectioner's sugar, I believe), but I have a considerable sweeter tooth than most. In any event, I feel awful for making you guys eat a rubbery cannoli!! I hope I can at least take some credit for steering you in the direction of Beyond Sushi, which I want right now THANKYOUVERYMUCH.

    1. I don't blame you or VT, it's just too bad the people at Atlas didn't really think about the heated. Granted, I didn't have to wolf down the entire thing as soon as I left - the one I gave to G I put in the fridge at work, maybe he enjoyed his more.
And yes, it's you and G both on the Beyond Sushi. So thank you for that.

  5. PS I have a chocolate covered cannoli waiting in my fridge as we speak.

  6. I've said it before and I'll say it again — I've never even seen anything like the sushi from beyond sushi. Vegetarian sushi is just an afterthought at most places.

The salads (except for the leggy part) look crunchy and delicious — much better than the cannoli.

    1. I never had either. Good on them.
Crunchy is the way to go! The lettuce was especially crunchy since I, uh, didn't do such a great job getting the grit off.

  7. It is very hard to ignore the siren call of sushi, ha ha. Those rolls sound like complete heaven. And they look crazy too! And ahhhhhhhhhh to the spider, I hate finding insects in produce! Even if it's a "good sign", it's still creepy as hell!

    1. Yes but you can make yr own! That is one skill I'm definitely jealous of. Just a couple more visits to Beyond Sushi and I'll have watched them roll them enough to attempt to make them myself.

  8. Thanks for the reminder that I'll never get to Beyond Sushi.

It's quite the chore to individually inspect and wash each CSA Lettuce Leaf. Like going back to olden days.

Those don't sound like the Vegan Treats Cannoli we know and love.

    1. I'll never have guinea fowl, or barn kitties. So.
How do you wash yr lettuce?? With a spinner? I think I need one of those.

    2. You still have the potential for Guinea Fowl and Barn Kitties when you get that Beet Farm with G.

No Spinner here. Just a big bowl of water, a lot of soaking, literally inspecting each individual lettuce leaf.

  9. I am quite jealous of the sushi. It's gorgeous! I've heard that there's a place in Milwaukee that makes vegan sushi but have yet to find it.

Too bad about the cannoli but you certainly made up for it with those great salads. Love that you added falafel. I love it in salads!

    1. Oooh! I'd love to see what kind of vegan sushi that place in milwaukee has.
Falafel is a good addition, usually. This stuff wasn't great but the tomatoes and cucumbers helped.

  10. Allow me to echo the sentiments of the others - the sushi is so gorgeous, absolute art!

I've never had a cannoli (I'm too far west - apparently Italians stopped at Chicago during the Western Movement, so no serious Italian eateries here. Sad face). However, from the way you described it, we must find a good vegan one. Immediately!

    1. I don't mean to put down VT cannolis. I just think they were improperly stored. Oh well. No good Italian eateries to be found is really sad, though, and I'm not even a huge fan of the food.

  11. The beyond sushi people should pay you in sushi to promote their shop! I'm convinced i have to return asap.....
How generous your friend shared such gorgeous produce- i am soooo guilty of "gritty" salads on occasion! I actually ruined a whole gorgeous batch of juice the other day when my half asleep self didnt wash the cilantro well enough.... :/
