A Sampling of Samples

Thanks, Sarah, for sending yet another sample of the raw cacao crunch cereal out! This stuff is really delicious. The top bowl is the cereal with banana and soy milk; the bottom bowl is the cereal with chopped pear, dried cranberries, sunflower seeds, and soy milk.

Spinach, mushrooms, avocado, cherry tomatoes, sundried tomatoes, cucumber, and lentils in there somwhere. Dressed in pav bhaji spice mix and Braggs.

I tried the roasted dandelion root tea, with soy milk. It's good but I really just enjoy my coffee.

Got this as a free sample at Whole Foods. Not particularly something I'd ever buy. It's a little too sweet, and raspberry lemonade is just kinda too fake a flavor for me. The GTs Kombuchas with chia seeds is preferable, if you want a chia drink (or make yr own.)

Spinach, carrot, tomato, lentil, avocado, miso-tahini dressing. My mom says I look yellow, so I guesss I'll be cutting back on carrots.

Banana with cashew butter this time around. It happened to be the cheapest (WF brand) but I like almond butter better, oddly (say that 5 times fast.) I like cashews a lot (obviously, I mean, duh) but I think I like them raw better than roasted. This stuff has a kinda dry flavor.

Do not recommend. These were way too sweet for me, had a sad plasticky aftertaste, and no raspberry jam flavor whatsoever. The crossword puzzle was hard too.

  1. Those rugelach are a blast from the past! Another example of how far we've come with the availability of vegan sweets. Still, I'm glad they exist.

That was some hefty sample from Whole Foods; I can't even get them to charge me correctly for what I buy. Score.

    1. Does it technically count as a sample if I had to pay 5 bucks but it came with a coupon book, a bag, the drink, and a box of chocolates?

  2. Isn't that cacao cereal awesome? I just loved it. Sarah rocks. :)

I love avocados and tomatoes together because the colors are just so pretty. The taste goes well, too, of course.

You must be eating a ton of carrots if you're skin is turning a bit yellow!

    1. Avocado goes pretty fantastically with anything!

  3. The dryness of nut butter is a real issue for me too. Although I suppose I could fix some of it through much more vigorous stirring... :) Also, SALADS. I want them all. And pav bhaji is so good that I'm super excited to figure out that spice mix, and then use it pretty much everywhere!

    1. This is the mix "recipe" I used to make bhaji. Really good. Not too spicy. http://www.jainworld.com/recipies/jainfood/list%20of%20recipes/spices/PAVBHAJI_MASALA.htm

  4. Wow — interesting assortment of samples! The crunchy raw cereal sounds great but the coco libre not so much. I love GTs kombucha with ginger. GTs is definitely my favorite.

    1. Well, I guess only some were actual samples. The salads were the real thing.

  5. The salads look great! I'm craving a giant salad with plenty of avocado now.

I've never seen chia drinks around here, but I'm intrigued. Maybe I will just make some lemonade and add chia seeds.

    1. Chia in drinks is kinda fun! You half chew, half swallow.

  6. I have been searching for the Lilly's Rugelah FOR YEARS!!!! I love it and I DO RECOMMEND IT!!!! Everyone's a critic!

When I was yellow, it was because I had Hepatitis (not 'C' ...hopefully).

  7. Yay, i'm so glad you liked the cereal! Both preparations look delicious! You know I love your salads and the Coco Libre looks... interesting. I'm not a huge fan of chia in my beverages so I'd probably pass... Too bad about the rugelach, it looks so good! Chocolate rugelach is SOOOOO GOOD.

    1. Yeah, thanks again! It was great. How do you eat it? I used to loooove omni rugelach; especially the prune and chocolate kind. This kind sadly did not live up to expectations.

    2. I usually eat it with banana and almond milk :) Simple and perfect!

  8. Lots of delicious and colorful meals happening! I think I'll look for that raw cereal; it sounds perfect for a little treat when I want something chocolatey.

I'll join you on the carrot reduction, but maybe after I finish this last bunch. ;) I've been enjoying them a lot lately.

    1. Yeah, the cereal is great! I always say the same thing about carrots - there are always so many hanging around, you just have to finish them up but before you know it, you've bought an entirely new bunch.

  9. Okay, I love chia drinks, and I'm pretty fond of kombucha, but I really hated the Coco Libre chia coconut water. Can't quite put my finger on what turns me off, but it was a huge disappointment. Sure wish my "sample" was free! Felt like an immense waste of money (those prices for a single bottle are a bit out of control...) Glad I'm not alone in that negative first impression though.

    1. Did you have the same flavor? Yeah, it was...bizarre. Sorry Coco Libre.

  10. Did you try microwaving the rughlah? Maybe its just a bit past the prime....
I love cashew butter but if you got unsalted then that may be why its blah- all nut butters need a pinch, huge difference in taste.
The cereal bowls look so great, nice mix of textues in there!
Your yellowing is also from sweet potatoes so..... Yeah. Maybe you can just do a fake tan to cover it up ;)
Im always to cheap to buy the fancy drinks like that but i often add chias to the fresh juices i make to give them more staying power

    1. I did not...maybe I will heat it up some other time. And yes, I really need to cut back on the sweet potatoes too :( but I looooove themmmmm.
Chia in OJ might be good. What do you add the seeds to?

  12. Chia seed drinks freak me out. Just the way they look. Maybe one day I'll make/buy one to see what the buzz is about. I'm all about that cereal though!

    1. Oh She Glows has a chia drink recipe. I wouldn't know what liquid to add it too, though.

  13. Ha! I know it's a good lunchbreak at work when I've finished off the crossword. I'd know it's a really good lunch if I had a salad like that one! I don't eat enough avocados because I can't be trusted to keep any in the house - I'd eat six a day if left unattended. Not sure about the chia drink - but if anyone's after a vegan frog spawn substitute, I know where to send them!
