Food and Friends

Soo, like I said, I was in the city yesterday on my day off, which is rare since it takes a lot to get me out of the house. But this was important: I was meeting up with Jenny of Vegan and So Forth! I've been following her blog for probably about as long as I've been blogging (maybe we "met" one MoFo? I can't remember!) and she has always struck me as one of the kindest and most giving bloggers I know.
Anyway, she seems to travel a lot and is in New York fairly frequently. This time she was here with her newest addition and one of her older children.
We met at Sacred Chow, a 100% vegan and kosher restaurant in the West Village. I told Jenny she has probably been to more NYC restaurants than I have but this is one restaurant I've been to (once before, as I used to work across the street) and she hadn't.
I'm not big on taking photos in public but I'm less shy about it when other people are doing it as well (one of the benefits of blogger meet-ups!) And so, the Kale Caesar salad with Tofu Croutons, which we both ordered:


It was good! I'm not sure what the dressing was made of; it tasted like a creamy mustard, kind of. I'm used to totally loaded salads, and this could have had a few more vegetables but it was filling either way. Also, I had not been eating enough greens recently and this definitely hit the spot.
That's my short re-cap. I had a lot of fun and, again, Jenny, thanks for getting me out of the house. I'd never had a meet-up before and I'm kind of awkward and shy but this was laid back and nice! And now that the ice has been broken, I'm all, "Every blogger, let's hang out forever! Party at my place, come on down. And bring yr pets and kids." That was another thing! I'm not around kids very often so I never really know what to expect but I was totally impressed with Jenny's kids. They're super well-behaved and seem very intelligent. Not to mention, what a cutie.
Can't wait for her re-cap of the whole trip and to see other places I need to visit.

Memorial Day: Burgers and Potato Salad

Burgers and potato salad! See, vegans are totally normal Americans too. A fugue, a variation on the theme, perhaps.
G saw a friend's pre-Memorial Day picnic meal and got hooked on the idea of a real burger. As I was in the city this morning (more on that tomorrow!), I stopped to do some errands and run into Whole Foods for some sorely needed groceries. I was reaaallly pleased that it wasn't very crowded (Expect the worst, I always say.) I got this brand of burgers because they were on sale (for 3.50):


I got home, listened to the Mets game (we lost boohoo) and whipped up a beet-potato salad (also filled with celery, chopped carrot, onion, mustard, and pickle juice). While that cooled, G was in charge of cooking the burgers while I yelled "That's enough oil in the pan!" ("If I'm in charge of burgers, who's in charge of me while I'm cooking the burgers?" "I am!")

Lookit that bright pink potato salad, whoa-oh. Loaded burger on a bun with avocado, spinach, tomatoes, mustard, and ketchup.

With red onion as well as the other stuff, potato salad on the side. I added ketchup after the photo and wish I hadn't. I don't really like it but I always forget that. The burgers were okay. They were a little soft (probably because they are gluten-free) and kind of sweet. It is also soy-based (non GMO) and not the shortest of ingredient lists, but it's a rare fun splurge. I definitely could have gone for some bolder spices in the flavorings. Nothing a couple good toppings can't help, though.

SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY

Don't know where that burst of energy came from, sorry. Oh, wait, it's probably the iced coffee I'm drinking right now. Despite the bombastic title, things were quiet around here today. Watched Groundhog Day (first time ever!), straightened up a bit, worked on some lettering, read, and even took a nap. Geez. The Memorial Day food was also less than stellar because there isn't much food in the house. I've been running around a lot recently and my mind was not focused on food. I even let a bag of spinach wilt (I'm sorry!) But there was a decent amount of fruit, making for a tasty raw superfood breakfast:



Chia pudding (1/8 c. seeds with about 1/3 c. water and 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract stirred and let to sit about 5 minutes) topped with banana slices, blueberries, and goji berries. Also dusted with ginger powder. I guess some of you call that powdered ginger. Pretty delicious, but light.

Super Quick Dinner

As, for some reason, I was famished when I got home. (Okay, first I ate a couple crackers.)

Blanched broccoli and raw mushrooms with a splash of rice vinegar, soy sauce, and sriracha, and some chopped ginger.


A couple forkfuls of unphotographed chickpeas as well. Ya know, for protein. Yes, they'd been cooked. I wasn't THAT hungry.

Not Food, Exactly

But I did (finally) finish the latest Marmalade Umlaut. Took a lot out of me, but I'm glad to be done and now I can move on to the next issue.

Also not food, exactly, as I was mostly interested in drinking beer and reading and writing poetry today:


It was rainy out. I went for a couple of walks under gray skies and read part of Wayne Koestenbaum's Blue Stranger with Mosaic Background and sipped a Magic Hat Elder Betty. T'was tasty and the reading was great.

Banana Sundae Smoothie

I wanted to make banana ice cream for dessert the other day but only had half a frozen banana in the freezer. I added about 3/4 cup of frozen strawberries into a blender with the banana, added half a pouch of chocolate Vega powder, about 1/2 cup of rice milk and topped it with some dried coconut. Et voila, a high-protein, absolutely delicious, vitamin-enriched dessert OR breakfast ;)

Making Up for Lost Meals

          Shiitake mushroom sushi rolls with brown rice mmmm. I love the chewy texture of these.


Two almost exactly similar salads. Watercress, avocado, spinach, broccoli, zucchini, olive, tomatoes, mushrooms, carrots, red onion, tofu. In a balsamic-mustard dressing with nooch.

Not Nicoise

Not exactly, anyway, but pretty inspired by the typical Nicoise salad.


Spinach, watercress, red onion, kalamata olives, tomatoes, boiled red potatoes, and roasted chickpeas.
I don't eat potatoes very often anymore, for whatever reason. I mostly got this recipe in mind because I was going to make it for my mom on mother's day but she said she had too much food at the house! Who refuses a daughter's home-cooked meal?? Anyway, I had bought the ingredients and once an idea is in mind, it's hard for me not to think...or obsess about it.
This was super good. I love olives. I love tomatoes. I love chickpeas and red onion. I love warm foods mixed with crunchy, cold foods. Watercress, I never buy but I also love it! The whole salad was topped with a creamy tahini sauce and black pepper. And it was awesome.
My mother's birthday is next weekend anyway so I may still make the dish. Let's call this a test run. A tasty test run.

Vega Berry Shake

It really shouldn't be so difficult to get a decent post up every once in a while. I'm gonna shoot for at least one good shot of an interesting bit of food a day. I may just have burnt myself out on the whole "here's what I eat" thing, since I eat so much of the same stuff.
I haven't had a smoothie in a while, yesterday I remedied that. Vega actually sent me a couple samples of their newly reworked protein formula, VegaOne, which I am really excited about. They sent vanilla chai, chocolate, berry, and natural flavors. Previously I've only tried vanilla and natural, which I liked, but I wanted to try out a new flavor:


This includes Vega berry flavor powder (I used half the sample package), 1 cup spinach, 1 cup frozen strawberries, 1/2 frozen banana, 1 tsp. chia seeds, about 1/4 c. soaked goji berries (plus more to garnish), and about 3/4 c of water to blend.
Totally refreshing and really good. The berry powder didn't taste fake, nor was the stevia flavor overpowering. This was maybe due to using half the serving size, which I might recommend anyway if you buy the powder because it is pretty expensive - though totally worth it.
The new formula has more fiber, more protein, more greens, and probiotics. They also claim the taste is improved so that you can even enjoy with water alone, but I haven't tried that.
There's an awesome sounding recipe for energy bars on the Vega site, so maybe I'll try that soon but I'm definitely looking forward to more smoothies.

I sure like to eat out of bowls

Guys! I am still a bit overwhelmed with doing non bloggy things but hopefully it'll all calm down soon. Til then, food:

Inspired by Lauren at Ginger is the New Pink and her awesome hummus/kraut salads. Spinach, zucchini, curry kraut, tomatoes, garlic hummus

                    Brown rice, Field Roast Chipotle link, raw broccoli, cherry tomatoes

One of the rare times I cook kale is when it's otherwise about to go bad. This was a super tasty bowl: steamed kale, carrot, and daikon, tofu, scallions, and mushrooms with sriracha and sesame seeds.

Cookies for Nick

Thank goodness not another death, but food of a more celebratory nature for others. One of our managers at work has moved on to bigger and better and happier things. (Actually another manager left the day before, too. Work is getting weeeeiiiirdddd.) So I baked cookies.

Coconut-lime cookies, like I said I would! Just in time for Cinco de Mayo. I based the recipe on Kelly Peloza's Glazed Lime cookies (without the glaze) from The Vegan Cookie Connoisseur. Upon just now searching to see if the recipe was online, though, I came across some Zesty Coconut Lime Wedding cookies she made that are pretty similar to what I did. Hm. Wish I'd known about those earlier so I didn't have to wing the recipe. Oh wells!

          Chocolate Chocolate Chip Walnut cookies from Veganomicon. Always a crowd-pleaser.


And that's that. Then that night he came out to a Marsh Hens show and I got drunk and asked him to sign my boobs. (He didn't.) (And I was TOTALLY JOKING ANYWAY.)
