Hohhhokay so I tried to calm down with the eating today. Breakfast was a scaled down version of yesterday's: Saltines with either Tofutti cream cheese or almond butter and banana slices. With more pickle coffee.

At work I snacked on an apple and then had lunch of a salad: lettuce, chipotle hummus, avocado, and the raw vegetables. The apple was a tiny one from upstate and was really good and crisp. I can't wait for apple season to really be back in full force. The salad was also notable in that I so rarely use lettuce as the base...I only did this because I have spinach at the apartment and didn't want to buy a repeat. I forgot how much I don't really enjoy lettuce. I think it was green leaf and it tasted dirty. Beh.

I also had an Apple Pie LARABAR later, which I am beginning to think is the only flavor I really should buy. That and Cherry are the two lowest calorie bars and of the two, I like apple pie better.
Oh! Also! A guy at work had gooseberries from the Farmer's Market and shared one with me! Have you ever had a gooseberry? Everyone who tried one had a different "It tastes like..." moment. Someone said Fruity Pebbles with a bitter aftertaste, someone else said sweet butter popcorn, and I thought it tasted oddly like cake batter. Weird, no? What is the most exotic fruit you've eaten? Lingonberry? Elderberry? Lychee? Starfruit?
Annnyway, I made it home and had a repeat of the salad out of the serving bowl and a beer, after two nights of not drinking!

I later ate the last few saltines with some almond butter and honey. Oh, and some apricots.
Cat sitting is over tomorrow, so who knows when I'll be able to post again. LIVE STRONG. Here are the kitties I was watching (Shen). Barack and Joe, adopted September 2008.

It's a Problem

Two days in a row. I am cat-sitting for a few days, which is the only reason I am able to update.
I eat a LOT when I do things like this because I don't have my own belongings to occupy me so I just sort of roam, trapped, around other people's living spaces and end up in the kitchen because at least I know how those rooms work. I also ate a lot today because I treat not being home like a vacation in that I get to roam around and taste the "local cuisine." I am cat-sitting about 15 minutes from where I grew up so this is by no means exotic BUT this 'hood does have the best, freshest bagels I've had in Queens, a health food store (they were hiring when I stopped by today!) and a closer proximity to Trader Joes. These things all together give me a belly ache. Well, those things and my lack of self control.
I got up in the morning and got some bagels, some fruit, and non-dairy Tofutti cream cheese. I ate a cinnamon-raisin bagel with the cream cheese and a sliced banana, along with some water and coffee with soy milk that I brought from home in a pickle jar. This was enjoyed out on the fire escape! Do you see how easy it is for me to imagine this one day off is a vacation?! Outdoor eating! Crossword puzzle!

I piddled around the house, somehow managing to eat another whole bagel.
I left to run some errands and blahdy blah, came home and ate lunch on guess what, another bagel. How have I not exploded at this point, you wonder?
Who knows. Lunch was an onion bagel with more fake cream cheese, lettuce, avocado, and tomato with a little black pepper.

It was tasty, but I was probably most concerned that it all just fit in my face. Ugh.
Read, roamed, did some onliney stuff and decided it was time for dinner.
This meal was a LITTLE more constrained, necessarily so. I picked up some raw vegetable medley from Trader Joe's and ate cauliflower, broccoli, and baby carrots with chipotle hummus and some Saltines (which I don't even like).

Then glommed way, way too many of these (delicious) gum drops while reading Jimmy Corrigan. It's good.


Ow.
G sent me an article about drinking and health which made me thirsty but I do NOT think my body could handle any alcohol right now. I really sicken myself sometimes. Sorry you all had to witness this. Ahh...check out the view?

Any guilty eats lately? Ones that lasted entire days? No? Just me? Oh.

Blate Blurunch

I promised Greg I would post this and HERE I YAM!
This one's worth it, too. We went to service at Brooklyn's first Unitarian Church this morning and had FUN. However, we left the house a little after 9, having only had coffee and when service was over, we were pretty hungry and had big plans for Sunday brunch, inspired by the beautiful, beautiful morning as well as all the fancy restaurants in downtown Brooklyn.
We decided on making tofu scramble and pancakes with fruit to go on top. We splurged a little and actually got the maple syrup too. It was worth it.
We used Isa's recipes from Vegan Brunch which is actually the first time I used the book I was oh-so-excited about (not that anyone really needs a tofu scramble recipe but her spice mix was something I didn't know). Her recipe is pretty basic, but we added mushrooms, tomato, and spinach to bulk it up.
The pancakes were really good (really, Greg) and the syrup was really delicious: we heated up the maple syrup with peach, banana, and pear. Fresh coffee and the world was complete.
I hope everyone's morning was as delicious. I'm going to go catch up on the blogs to make sure about that: Sorry, I've been out of the internet for some while now.

Nutrients, not Nutrinos

HERE IS THE UNVEILING YOU ALL HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR (or maybe I've just had too much coffee and am unnecessarily excited about these vitamins.)


New vitamins! These are VegLife Vegan One Multiple. Totally swallowable and no taste. Also, they were pretty cheap as far as vitamins go. Believe me, I've been looking around. The rest of breakfast was half a ruby grapefruit and iced coffee with almond milk. Oh, and the grapefruit was amazing! I haven't eaten one in so long, but I might start.
Lunch featured the vegetables from the Farmer's Market.

Honestly, I really did try for the most amount of colors possible in this salad, but that is always one way to make sure you're getting various vitamins. Eat the Rainbow, you know. This salad was really good: spinach, peppers, tomato, carrot, a little bit of tofu, zucchini AND yellow squash, onion and sprouts. I topped it with some mustard, balsamic vinegar, and nooch.

At work, I snacked on a banana and some more stupid ginger candies but only because I was really hungry. When I got home, I wanted something filling and quick, so:

A carrot and zucchini sticks alongside an open-face sandwich of hummus, onion, spinach, and tomato.

No Food, then Food

So, on the saving money on food front: not working. I guess this month I'm just working more on a more accurate tally of how much I really do spend in a month. Sunday I spent $2.50 on an Amazing Grass bar because I was invited to my parents' for lunch...but then there was nothing I could eat there. My sister made crab cakes, cornbread, and a salad (topped with non-vegan dressing, so). I ate some carrots, a banana, and a bit of bread and hung out with these dudes:


When I got home I had to run right back out to see Inception with Greg. It's a long movie and I was hungry and knew I wouldn't have a chance to eat so, yeah, I grabbed a $2.50 bar. Eh.

Anyways, yesterday I didn't have much food around so I made this sort of sad sandwich:

It was tasty enough, just lacking in vegetables. I actually put tomato paste on one slice of bread because I don't have any tomatoes! Otherwise it is spinach, hummus, tofu, and onion. Whatever.
Then I had to go into the city for NEW VITAMINS! These are the old ones, grossy gross gross.
I stopped at the Union Square Farmer's Market as well as the neighborhood grocery on the way back and these are the goods:
Purple Peppers! An orange tomato that looks like a butt! So, yeah. Whole Foods actually has a sale on both squash and peppers right now that would have been cheaper than the Farmer's Market but I'm happier to give local farms my money for tastier vegetables. And butt-shaped ones especially.

Weirdest Lunch Ever

Not so much because of the food itself but because as I tried to enjoy my lunch in St. Marks' Church park with a book, I was engaged in two conversations.
One was with a nice street-punk squatter type:
"That looks like a nice salad."
"Thanks."
"Vegan?"
"Uh-huh."
"Yeah, tofu and all that. Carrots are hard on my teeth, though. You gotta be careful. They're better boiled but you lose all the vitamins that way."
"I know."
"Well, have a nice book!"
"You too."

That was nice of him. That I can deal with. But then, another dude comes up to me who is obviously out of his mind on something but not a crusty street punk. I can't even transcribe the conversation because he was rambling about everything and nothing and kept asking to see the book when I was making an obvious point to be very engrossed in its pages. Some highlights, however:
"You ever heard the phrase alla eloquentia?" "No." "It means everything is eloquent." "Oh."
"You ever wonder about death and dying?" "No."
"I thought that pigeon was eating a rock. Why would it do that?" "I don't know."
"You know the phrase [fkjhfaifhhdu]?" This question I just ignored completely, but gave him a flat out "No" without looking at him to his final, "Care to grab a drink?"
Then he got up and left.

Anyway, the salad wasn't very good. It needed more flavor but at least I didn't spend any money on food yesterday.

Ice Cream Comic

Here is the recipe part of the comic Greg drew when we made ice cream together. The recipe isn't vegan. Maybe we'll work on that later but it was a fun experiment and made for a good comic. A Full Day

-In every meaning of the word. I was quite filled with every meal AND I have a photo for every meal as well.
The day started out with breakfast. Obviously. I ate a banana first (okay, that one's unpictured) along with some warm lemon water for digestion and one of the last of my crappy old vitamins. I actually dropped one on the floor and considered the five-second rule, but realized that if I threw it out, it'd be one less to eat. Guh.
After about a half hour (I get up early so I have this time to waste), I had a bowl of Pumpkin Flax Plus Granola that I won from Jenny. (She's having another giveaway, by the way). It was really tasty and super dense, so I didn't need much. Iced coffee, obvi.



Lunch was leftover pasta from the other day, on top of some spinach!


At work, I snacked on an apple from home and four or um six ginger candies I bought the other day. I am trying to spend less money on food so I'm using up random crap I have scattered all over work.

Annnddddd dinner was an awesome salad I made: Spinach, tofu, avocado, sprouts, zucchini, carrots, tomato and mushroom. Topped with nooch, black pepper, and-get this-red wine vinegar! NOT balsamic! I bought it for a project in the works with G and it was alright. A little light for my taste, but maybe I didn't use much. In any case, the salad itself was the star.


And for a little bit of research for this new "stop spending so damn much money on food" - how much would you guys estimate you spend a month on food? I'm just one person and I estimated about $250! Is that ridiculous? Do you ever try and cut back on it?

Just Food

Here are some random shots from the other day -
I went to visit my parents and took a photo of the corn growing in their yard.


I also went grocery shopping with my dad and it was really weird to shop for more than one person, especially when those people have completely different food tastes from myself (well, not completely: my mom yelled to us as we left the house, "Get some chicken! Oh and get me something healthy!" My dad replies, "Tofu?" -Silence- "I-I'll eat tofu!" It was cute.)
I don't even look anymore at the egg/dairy section and all of a sudden I'm considering the sale options of yogurts: Fruit on the Bottom? No-Fat? Do my parents want brown or white eggs? Jumbo A or Large AA? (Does anyone even know what those rating systems mean?)
The funniest part was when I was holding my arms around me in the meat department (because it was so cold - not from horror, although..) and my dad suggests I stand in front of the rotisserie to warm up! Like a chicken! Ahaha. I declined and offered to pick up the white trash bags.

Anyway, I went home and Greg and I hung out and ended up making another Colleen Patrick-Goudreau: "Crowd-Pleasing Pasta with Tomatoes and Artichokes." It definitely would have fed a crowd - we were left with a huge pot's-worth afterward. Her recipe calls for olives, which we left out but added in mushrooms, and we also left out the garlic since we used marinated artichokes which probably had already been sitting in garlic. We also steamed a bit of spinach in (which pretty much disappeared in cooking) for some greenery. It was tasty.

Leftover Lunch Party

Because of all the dinner parties lately, my food for personal use has been a little lacking of late. I don't mean to make this sound like a complaint - to have the luxuries of dining with friends all the time would be great, but it means I'm eating a little less healthfully and that I'm spending more money on food than I already do (which is a lot.)
It also means fewer food photos, though mine aren't exactly anything special anyway. However, I did bring the last leftover stuffed pepper from Sunday's dinner party (that would be DP3 to you dirty minds out there) for lunch on Friday, so at least you get to see how they turned out. I threw it on top of some spinach because that never hurt anyone. The only hard part about eating this out for lunch was that I only brought a fork and had to jab and smush the pepper to get it into attackable bites.

Today I brought spinach for lunch, yes, just spinach but then my hunger got the better of me and I went out for pizza at a vegan/vegetarian pizza place near work, Viva Herbal. I got a Tuita Verde slice, which was HUGE and also hard to navigate...with my mouth. It was topped with green pepper, zucchini, spinach, broccoli and vegan pesto. I'm pretty sure it was on a spelt crust, too, which was really delicious. I added even more green by topping the HUGE did I mention HUGE slice with Tabasco green pepper sauce. I like it hot. I'm sorry I didn't even think to bring my camera, I was so anxious to get out for break.

I also fiiiiinally bought a few vegetables after work, really only enough to get me through dinner: carrots and zucchini along with some hummus on sale and Triscuits.

So dinner was a MAD lot of crackers with hummus (the hummus was just okay but again - on sale!) and the spinach from lunch turned into the salad I've been eating of late: spinach, tomato, capers, onion, nooch, and balsamic vinegar. On the side is carrot and zucchini spears.

I am now drinking beer and hoping for the best with Umlaut 13.
Oh, PS - Scary Vegetables!
